Guirassy breaks three scoring records

Guirassy scored nine goals in the group stage, one in the playoffs, and, after advancing in the knockout rounds, he scored a hat-trick in the return match against Barcelona, although his team was eliminated on aggregate (5-3 in favor of Barça).

This performance not only catapulted him to the top of the table but also allowed him to set a new record as the African footballer with the most goals in a single edition of the Champions League (13) and also surpass previous marks of figures such as Haaland and Lewandowski (10 goals in an edition with Dortmund).

Serhou Guirassy is the first African player to score a hat-trick against Barcelona in the Champions League, in addition to being the player who has scored the most goals against the Azulgrana team in the same edition of the competition (five in 24/25).

Controversy over goals scored in the playoffs

With the implementation of the new format in the Champions League, not all teams play the same number of matches, generating a comparative grievance that seriously adulterates the results in statistical terms.

With the current rules, the players of the top eight classified in the league phase, the best clubs in the competition, are penalized, while the players of the 'worst' teams are benefited by counting the goals scored in the two additional matches of the playoffs. Precisely Serhou Guirassy of Borussia Dortmund leads the table with 13 goals, holding the first position thanks to 1 goal scored in a repechage round.

Raphinha and Lewandowski can increase their goal tally

Raphinha, meanwhile, led the table for several matchdays and currently has 12 goals, being a key piece in the Blaugrana offense and also the leader in assists in the tournament (7), with a total of 19 goal involvements. With this figure, he is emerging as a strong candidate to close the season among the players with the most goals in a single edition. To put it in context, Leo Messi reached his best record in 2011/12 with 14 goals. The Brazilian is very close.

Lewandowski, with 11 goals, completes the podium after his brace in the first leg against Dortmund. Since turning 30, the '9' of Barça has proven to be lethal in the Champions League, scoring 60 goals in 59 matches. Only Cristiano Ronaldo surpasses that figure at this stage of his career, with 68 goals in 74 matches from the age of 30.

The race for the top scorer title could still change, as Barcelona is still alive in the competition and Raphinha and Lewandowski will have more opportunities to add goals in the semifinals. However, Guirassy will no longer be able to increase his tally after Dortmund's elimination.

What is the record for goals in a Champions League season?

The record for goals in a UEFA Champions League season is held by Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 17 goals in the 2013-2014 campaign with Real Madrid. This mark is the highest in the history of the tournament since its current format.

In addition, Ronaldo also occupies the second and third place in this ranking, with 16 goals in the 2015-2016 season and 15 goals in 2017-2018, respectively.
