Life is a habit of giving second chances. Gündogan, after having spent a year without beating Real Madrid while defending the FC Barcelona jersey in 3 'Clásicos', will once again face the team managed by Carlo Ancelotti this Tuesday. They will face each other in the first leg of the Champions League round of 32, at the Etihad Stadium. Both teams are going through difficult times, but it is still a clash between two of the strongest teams in the competition.
This is the fourth time in five years that both teams have met. However, they had never met in the round of 32, as this round did not exist in the previous format. The 'sky blues' and the 'merengues' will battle this Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. for a place in the next round. However, the tie will be decided next Wednesday, when the return leg of the tie will take place at the Santiago Bernabéu. One of the men who is expected to be important in this clash is Ilkay Gündogan, who could be in the starting line-up in a hypothetical double pivot with Nico González. The German will have the chance to get revenge on the team that wears white.
Gündogan's record against Real Madrid
The veteran midfielder born in Gelsenkirchen has faced Real Madrid a total of 11 times, of which he has won 5, drawn 2 and lost 4. Until his arrival at FC Barcelona, he had only lost once, in 2013, in the second leg of the semi-final between Borussia Dortmund and the team from the Spanish capital. That match ended 2-0, but the aggregate gave the German team a pass to the final by the minimum (4-3). However, after Gündogan's time at the culé team in the 23/24 season, the number of defeats increased to the current one.
Ilkay's record against the white team, only counting the games in which he has played, without adding those in which he has been on the bench or injured, is as follows:
