Hansi Flick has confirmed the squad list for the duel against AS Monaco on the first day of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League. This list highlights some key absences, but also confirms a long-awaited return and two interesting additions from the reserve team

Calendar of FC Barcelona

The FC Barcelona has announced the list of 23 players called up to face AS Monaco in the debut match of the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 season. This match will take place on Thursday, September 19 at the Stade Louis II, the home ground of the Monegasque team. In this venue, the Blaugrana team will aim to maintain their dominant form, having secured five victories (against Valencia CF, Athletic Club, Rayo Vallecano, Real Valladolid, and Girona) in the first five matches of the 2024/25 season.

In this regard, Hansi Flick brings some positive news to his squad with Ansu Fati's long-awaited return. The player from Bissau had been dealing with plantar fasciitis in his right foot since July 24, but has recently been training regularly with the group. Therefore, he has been cleared to play in this match and will be available to strengthen the team's attacking line.

It is also worth mentioning that the German coach has once again turned to the reserve team to bolster the first team. The inclusion of defender Andrés Cuenca stands out in the 23-man squad, along with the positive addition of Antonio 'Toni' Fernández, a promising talent from the Barça Atlètic. Both 'Toni' and his cousin Guillermo, who is also in this call-up, are recognized as the youngest goal scorers in the history of the 'B' team.

What about the absences in the FC Barcelona squad for the match against AS Monaco?

Meanwhile, in the FC Barcelona squad, compared to the previous game against Girona, the absence of Dani Olmo is notable, as he is recovering from a hamstring injury in his right thigh. Additionally, there is the absence of Fermín López, who was recently announced to be dealing with a muscle injury in the anterior thigh. These absences add to the already known ones, such as Ronald Araújo (hamstring injury in the right thigh tendon), Andreas Christensen (left Achilles tendon tendinopathy), and Marc Bernal (anterior cruciate ligament rupture in the left knee with associated meniscus injury).

It is important to note that although Frenkie de Jong (severe grade II sprain in his right ankle) and Pablo Gavi (complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and associated meniscus injury) have recently returned to training with the team, they have not yet been medically cleared for this match. Caution is still being exercised regarding their respective recoveries.
