Here's how the 2024/25 Champions League standings look after the second matchday

Borussia Dortmund are the surprising leaders of the Champions League after two rounds. Meanwhile, Barça (16th) have already overtaken Real Madrid (17th) in the table

The second matchday of the 2024/25 Champions League ended with several surprise results and real surprises in the standings. In the key to Barça, the Blaugrana team recovered from the defeat against Monaco with a solid thrashing of Young Boys (5-0) that allows Hansi Flick's team to remain in the play-off spots for the round of 16, while Madrid suffered an embarrassing defeat in Lille (1-0).

The top of the standings has Borussia Dortmund, Stade Brest and Benfica as leaders with 6 points. The Germans crushed Cletic Glasgow (6-1) led by a great Karim Adeyemi (scored a hat trick), while the French team also won with authority on the field of RB Salzburg (0-4). For their part, the Portuguese crushed Atlético de Madrid at home (4-0) and added their second victory in a row.

Bayer Leverkusen (1-0 against Slovan Bratislava) and Liverpool (2-0 against Bologna) both secured hard-fought wins and remain in the direct qualification zone (fourth and fifth, respectively). Meanwhile, Aston Villa caused one of the surprises of the day by beating Bayern Munich (1-0) and are sixth. The qualification zone is completed, for the moment, by Juventus and Manchester City, who finished the day with victories of 2-3 against RB Leipzig and 0-4 against Slovan Bratislava, respectively.

Further down, in 9th place, is Inter Milan, and behind the Nerazzurri, already in the play-off zone, are Sparta Prague (10), Atalanta (11), Sporting CP (12), Arsenal (13), Monaco (14) and Bayern Munich (15), all of them with 4 points less the Bavarians, who have 3.

Then come the two big teams in Spain, with Barça occupying 16th position after crushing Young Boys and, one place below, Real Madrid (17), who were defeated by Lille. Precisely, the latter follow the merengues in 18th place, and behind them are PSG (19), Celtic (20), Club Brugge (21), Feyenoord (22) and Atlético de Madrid (23), all of them with 3 points, while PSV Eindhoven (24) closes the play-off with 1 unit.

Finally, out of the classification, for now, are Stuttgart, Bologna, Shahktar, Dinamo Zagreb, RB Leipzig, Girona, Sturm Graz, AC Milan, Red Star, RB Salzburg, Slovan Bratislava and Young Boys. Matchday 3 of the league phase will be played between Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 October.
