The matchups of matchday one on this Tuesday, September 17th in the UEFA Champions League 2024/25

  • Juventus 3-1 PSV Eindhoven
  • Young Boys 0-3 Aston Villa
  • Real Madrid 3-1 Stuttgart
  • Bayern Munich 9-2 Dinamo Zagreb
  • Sporting Lisbon 2-0 LOSC Lille
  • AC Milan 1-3 Liverpool

Juventus 3-1 PSV Eindhoven

Juventus from Turin has made a strong comeback in the UEFA Champions League. After a season without participating in this European competition (2023/24), Thiago Motta's team has made a significant impact. At their own stronghold, the Juventus Stadium, they delivered a standout performance with goals that made the difference.

The Turkish forward Kenan Yildiz, at just 19 years and 136 days, became the youngest player in the history of this tournament to score the opening goal of the competition, surpassing Daniel Amokachi (19 years and 331 days). Additionally, Weston McKennie scored in the 27th minute and Nicolas Gonzalez in the 52nd minute. On the other hand, the Dutch side could only respond with a goal at the end of the match, in the 90+3 minute, courtesy of Ismael Saibari.

Young Boys 0-3 Aston Villa

Aston Villa, on the other hand, had no trouble defeating Young Boys, delivering a convincing away win to the Swiss with three goals scored by Youri Tielemans in the 27th minute, Jacob Ramsey in the 38th minute, and Amadou Onana in the 86th minute. This significant victory places the 'Villans' as one of the best debutant teams in the UEFA Champions League playing away from home. Other notable results in this record include Ferencvaros' 0-3 victory over Grasshopper (2009) and Leicester's 0-3 win over Brugge (2016).

Real Madrid 3-1 Stuttgart

The current champion of the UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid, also had a successful debut against Stuttgart, winning by a score of 3-1. In an exciting match, the first goal was scored by the relentless French forward Kylian Mbappe in the 46th minute. The equalizer for the Germans came in the 68th minute thanks to Deniz Undav.

However, the Madrid side did not settle for a draw and secured the victory with a goal from Antonio Rudiger in the 83rd minute and another from Endrick in the 90+5 minute. With this last goal, the 18-year-old Brazilian striker became the youngest goal scorer in the history of Real Madrid in any official international competition.

Furthermore, it is worth noting a curious fact: in this match, the white team had a penalty in their favor overturned for the first time in the history of the UEFA Champions League due to VAR.

Bayern Munich 9-2 Dinamo Zagreb

Bayern Munich probably played the most outrageously strange game of the matchday, and how could it not be? It's not common to see a team at this level of football deliver a brutal 9-2 thrashing to their opponent, a feat through which the Bavarian team etched their name in history by becoming the first team to score nine goals in a single UEFA Champions League match.

The star of this rout? Harry Kane. The English forward scored a poker of goals at the 19', 57', 73', and 78' marks. With this outstanding performance, clearly the MVP of the match, the former Tottenham player became the first player in the tournament's history to achieve a 'hat-trick' exclusively through penalties.

Furthermore, 'Hurrykane' became the first English player to score four goals in a Champions League match for a non-British club. Equally, he became the fourth English player to net a poker of goals, following Dennis Viollet for Manchester United in 1956, Ray Crawford for Ipswich Town in 1962, and Alan Smith for Arsenal in 1991.

In the resounding victory of Bayern Munich, goals were also contributed by Raphael Guerreiro (33'), Michael Olise (38' and 61'), Leroy Sane (85'), and Leon Goretzka in the 90+2'. This ruthless thrashing was only slightly countered by the Croats with goals from Bruno Petkovic in the 48th minute and Takuya Ogiwara in the 50'.

Sporting Lisbon 2-0 LOSC Lille

Another team that had a successful debut in the first matchday of the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 was Sporting Club de Portugal. Thanks to goals from Viktor Gyokeres in the 38th minute and Zeno Debast in the 65', they managed to defeat LOSC Lille, who only scored through a goal from Angel Gomes in the 40th minute.

In this match, it is noteworthy to highlight the starting debut of Geovany Quenda, 17 years and 140 days old, thus becoming the youngest Portuguese player in the history of the UEFA Champions League to be part of a starting eleven. Additionally, he ranks as the ninth youngest player in the history of the competition across all previous editions.

AC Milan 1-3 Liverpool

Lastly, but certainly not least, the emphatic victory of Liverpool at San Siro against AC Milan stands out in one of the most attractive duels due to the history between both clubs. The 'Rossoneri' took the lead in the 3rd minute with a goal from Christian Pulisic. However, this goal was not enough to stop the overwhelming attack of the 'Reds', who, through goals from Ibrahima Konate in the 23rd minute, Virgil Van Dijk in the 41st minute, and Dominik Szoboszlai in the 67', managed to prevail with great authority.
