The Polish striker of FC Barcelona has managed to join Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to form the select group of players who have surpassed 100 goals in the top European competition

Calendar of FC Barcelona

Robert Lewandowski is a goalscorer of the kind that no longer exist. He is 36 years old, but the goals continue to fall from his pockets. In FC Barcelona's victory over Brest he achieved a historic milestone: reaching 100 goals in the Champions League. This feat had only been achieved by Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but the Pole has managed to equal the highest scoring average, that of the Rosario striker, with 0.8 goals scored per game.

This fact has made him the highest scoring centre forward in the competition. He has now scored 101 goals in 125 games in the top European championship. Thirteen years after scoring his first, in a match with Borussia Dortmund against Olympiacos, Lewandowski became the third player to score a hundred goals in the Champions League.

The 101 goals, in detail

As previously mentioned, he scored his first goal against Olympiacos. He did it in a Dortmund shirt, in a 3-1 defeat in Greece. A 23-year-old Robert wrote his name in the prestigious competition. In his two remaining seasons with the German team, he managed to send 16 more balls into the back of the net, making a total of 17 goals.

Later, at the express request of a new arrival Pep Guardiola, Lewandowski moved to another city and signed for Bayern. With the Bavarian team he scored 69 goals and lifted the Champions League trophy on one occasion. The season in which he scored the most goals of his entire career was in 19/20, when he got 15 in 10 games. That season was the one in which the Munich team lifted the 'Big Ears' with Hansi Flick in charge.

After eight years at the German giant, Lewandowski took on a new challenge: helping FC Barcelona get back on its feet. Since joining the club in 2022, the Polish striker has celebrated 15 goals, with the penultimate being the most important, with which he managed to reach 100. In the same way, in his two and a half years with the Barça jersey he has already accumulated 81 goals, so it could be a season in which he celebrates 100 goals twice.

His goals in each round, victims and coaches

The distribution of the goals according to the round is quite unbalanced, as is logical due to the difference in matches in each one. Of the 101 goals, 69 have been in the group stage, 19 in the round of 16, 6 in the quarter-finals and 7 in the semi-finals. The only phase in which he has not managed to score is in the final, although it is also true that he has only played two.

All these goals have been distributed between 42 clubs. The most scored against are Benfica and Red Star, teams against which the Pole has scored 7 goals. Next up are Real Madrid and Salzburg, teams that have conceded 6 goals from Lewandowski.

Regarding the distribution of goals with each coach who has managed him, the coach who has seen Robert celebrate the most goals is Hansi Flick, with 22. He scored 15 in the season they won the Champions League at Bayern and has scored 7 this year at Can Barça. Next up are Jürgen Klopp (17), Pep Guardiola (15), Niko Kovac and Julian Nagelsmann (13), Carlo Ancelotti (9), Xavi Hernández (8) and Jupp Heynckes (4).

Hunting for new records

Despite joining Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the players who have reached 100 goals in the Champions League, surpassing them seems difficult. The top scorer is the Portuguese, with 140 goals in 183 games. The Argentine follows him, with 129 goals in 163 games. So, despite the fact that the Barça legend is the closest to him, at 36 years of age, it is difficult for Lewandowski to overcome it.

However, the scorer of FC Barcelona's 700th goal in the Champions League should not be discouraged. He has 590 goals in his club career, so he can focus on rounding out his record. He is also 19 goals away from reaching 100 as a Barça player, something that not everyone can achieve.
