Lewandowski and Guirassy meet again this Wednesday in the Champions League. Who will make the difference in the showdown of scorers?
FC Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund face off again in the UEFA Champions League 2024-25, this time in the quarter-finals. After the thrilling clash between the two in the league phase (2-3 in favor of Barça), both teams arrive with very different circumstances, but with two scorers ready to make a difference in their fight for the title and the Pichichi of the top European competition: Robert Lewandowski and Serhou Guirassy.
The Guinean has 10 goals and 3 assists in the 12 matches played by Dortmund, while 'Lewy' maintains his record at 9 goals with a couple of matches less, as Barça did not have to play the playoff to advance to the round of 16. So far, Raphinha leads the Champions scoring chart with 11 goals, followed by Guirassy and Harry Kane, who has also scored 10 goals in 12 appearances with Bayern Munich.
In the case of the '9' of Borussia, Barça knows very well what the French-born player can do. Serhou scored a brace against the Catalans in the match of matchday 6 of the group stage, one of them from the penalty spot. Lewandowski, on the other hand, could not score against his former team, one of his favorite victims in the last decade. The Pole scored 27 goals in 26 matches against Dortmund while wearing the Bayern shirt, being the opponent he has historically scored the most against as a professional.
Lewandowski and Guirassy reach the quarter-finals with three matches without scoring
However, both scorers, curiously, arrive at the first leg of the quarter-finals with a drought of three matches without 'wetting the net'. Robert could not score against Atalanta (2-2) and did not do so in the two matches of the round of 16 against Benfica (4-1 on aggregate). Guirassy, for his part, went blank in the return leg against Sporting CP (0-0), while in the tie against Lille (3-2) he did not score any goals.
The Guinean, however, provided two crucial assists for Dortmund to turn the score around in the return leg against Lille, serving the goals for qualification. In the league, the '9' of the Germans scored one of the goals in the victory against Freiburg (1-4) on Saturday, while Lewandowski broke a streak of four consecutive matchdays in LaLiga shaking the nets in the draw against Betis (2-2).
Still, the Barça scorer remains as Pichichi with 25 goals and is 'in the race' for the Golden Boot. In total, Robert has scored 38 goals in 44 matches with the Catalans, by far his best season in Spain, while Serhou is also having a great debut year with Borussia, although with more modest records than his rival on Wednesday (25 goals in 37 appearances).
