1️⃣ FC Barcelona 3-1 SL Benfica
The match that marked the opening of this stage of the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League 2024-25 was between FC Barcelona and SL Benfica at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. In this confrontation, the Catalans demonstrated their hierarchy and achieved a resounding victory that can be considered a statement, with a memorable score of 3-1, where no player from the club was out of place.
Highlighted was the performance of Lamine Yamal (one goal and one assist) and Raphinha, the undeniable MVP of the night with two goals and one assist. The Lisbon team could only score a consolation goal through Nicolás Otamendi, which ultimately was not enough to change the score. Added to the 0-1 from the first leg at the Estádio da Luz, the final aggregate was a resounding 4-1 in favor of Barcelona.
- How did the series end? ⚽: 4-1 (0-1 in favor of FC Barcelona in the first leg and 3-1 in favor of the Catalans in the second leg)
- Which team will they face in the quarter-finals? ⚔️: Borussia Dortmund or LOSC Lille
2️⃣ Bayer Leverkusen 0-2 Bayern Munich
On the other hand, a match that had no major surprises was that of Bayer Leverkusen against Bayern Munich. The Bavarians, who arrived with a three-goal advantage from the home result, completed their task at the Bay Arena, where they won 0-2 with goals from Alphonso Davies and Harry Kane. With this, the total score of the series ended 5-0 in favor of 'Die Roten'.
The team of Vincent Kompany dominated the actions from start to finish, enjoying numerous opportunities that, whether due to lack of precision, bad luck, or defensive interventions, did not turn into goals. These opportunities could not be effectively responded to by a Bayer Leverkusen that was missing its main offensive reference, Florian Wirtz, and had great difficulties generating danger, limiting itself to sporadic chances.
- How did the series end? ⚽: 0-5 (3-0 in favor of Bayern Munich in the first leg and 0-2 in favor of the Bavarians in the second leg)
- Which team will they face in the quarter-finals? ⚔️: Inter Milan
3️⃣ Inter Milan 2-1 Feyenoord
Another tie that was defined with a fairly comfortable score, but had a quite interesting second leg was that of Inter Milan and Feyenoord. The 'nerazzurri', who arrived with a good lead having achieved a 0-2 in Dutch territory, practically sealed the series quickly in the return match.
Before the 10-minute mark, they were already leading 1-0 with a goal from Marcus Thuram. Although the Dutch managed to equalize the match in the 42nd minute with a penalty goal from Jakub Moder. However, the Italians would extend their lead through a penalty converted by Hakan Çalhanoğlu in the 52nd minute.
Throughout the match, Inter Milan proved to be superior, deserving the victory at all times, thus consolidating an aggregate score of 4-1.
Despite the Dutch trying to impose conditions in the match, the locals effectively limited their actions. Furthermore, it was clear that the visitors could have lost by an even greater margin if Inter had been more accurate in front of goal on more than one occasion.
- How did the series end? ⚽: 4-1 (0-2 in favor of Inter Milan in the first leg and 2-1 in favor of the 'nerazzurri' in the second leg)
- Which team will they face in the quarter-finals? ⚔️: Bayern Munich
4️⃣ Liverpool 0-1 Paris Saint-Germain (1-4 on penalties)
The duel that undoubtedly set the tone for this day was the clash between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain. A match that was anticipated to be extremely exciting and indeed was, as both clubs demonstrated in the first leg the parity they could offer, with a narrow victory of 0-1 in favor of Liverpool. The Parisians were close to winning that match if it weren't for the outstanding performance of Alisson Becker.
However, in the return match, fortune smiled in favor of PSG. In almost anecdotal fashion, the team of Luis Enrique managed to force extra time against Liverpool with a 0-1, where the French hero was Ousmane Dembélé. It was a truly even match, full of ups and downs, with opportunities for both teams that ultimately was decided in a penalty shootout.
The emotions were not lacking in the penalty shootout, where the standout figure of the day was Gianluigi Donnarumma, goalkeeper of PSG, who saved the shots from Darwin Núñez and Curtis Jones. On the other hand, the Parisians effectively converted their four penalties, which represented a resounding blow from Luis Enrique's team, demonstrating that they are ready for great things.
- How did the series end? ⚽: 1-1 (0-1 in favor of Liverpool in the first leg and 0-1 in favor of PSG in the second leg)
- Which team will they face in the quarter-finals? ⚔️: Aston Villa or Club Brugge
