FC Barcelona officially presented its candidacy for the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League title on Wednesday in Montjuïc after beating Bayern Munich (4-1). The team led by Hansi Flick crushed the Bavarians, their 'black beast' in recent seasons and a team against which they had lost six in a row.
And since 2015, Barça had only had frustrations against the Munich team, although that year the culés managed to advance to the semi-finals (5-3 on aggregate). Bayern had defeated the Catalans in the following three seasons that they crossed paths, even without conceding goals in the last four duels.
Barça's scoring drought against Bayern began in 2020, in the quarterfinal match in Lisbon (2-8). And, in the section of victories and defeats, the last Barça success dated back to the first leg of the 2015 'semi' (3-0) at Camp Nou.
Barça's latest defeats against Bayern and a very favorable precedent
In that sense, the victory in Montjuïc opens the door to a very favorable precedent for the Catalans when they manage to beat the German giant. In both 2015 and 2009 (Barça won 4-0 in the first leg of the quarterfinals), the Barça team ended up lifting the 'orejona'.
And not only that. In both seasons, the culés won the treble, first with Pep Guardiola on the bench and then under the technical leadership of Luis Enrique. Bayern had also eliminated Barça in the 2013 semi-finals, where, like in 2020, the Bavarians also won the triple crown (league, cup and Champions League).
In 2021 and 2022, the two teams had crossed paths in the group stage. Barça finished playing in the Europa League in both seasons, while the Bavarians fell in the quarterfinals (against Villarreal and Manchester City, respectively).
