BSC Young Boys coach Patrick Rahmen discussed his team's strategy to contain the formidable Lamine Yamal in the clash against FC Barcelona. He also discussed his game plan against FC Barcelona
Patrick Rahmen, coach of BSC Young Boys, just like Hansi Flick did at one point, appeared at the press conference prior to the clash between his team and FC Barcelona, in the context of the second matchday of the UEFA Champions League, which will take place at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys (Montjuïc) on Tuesday at 9:00 PM. During his speech, the Swiss coach did not hesitate to mention the current star player: Lamine Yamal, highlighting the game plan he would implement to contain him.
"He is an excellent player, his talent is exceptional. What he has achieved at such a young age... is outstanding. But there won't be individual marking, we will try to control him as a team. We need to be organized," stated the Basel native, making it clear that he will prioritize collective work over individual marking, despite Lamine Yamal currently being one of the most disruptive players in the world and having already scored in the Champions League.
Rahmen also spoke about the current state of FC Barcelona
On another note, Patrick Rahmen also commented more generally on his perception of the current state of FC Barcelona. "Barça has always had an excellent, top team in recent years. Adjustments are always made when a new coach arrives. Flick has started well, playing excellently because he has a very high-quality squad. We will play with a lot of energy," he warned.
The game plan of BSC Young Boys
Furthermore, he explained how he plans to counter the playing style of the German coach, which stands out for its good functioning and star players. "Even though you come as the Swiss champion, you know that each Barcelona player can cause you problems. Each Barça player has qualities, and we must prevent them all from playing so they don't cause us problems and we can have ball possession and control the game. We must close the spaces and prevent them from developing their game," he added.
Finally, Rahmen detailed what the game plan of Young Boys will be at Montjuïc and how they plan to carry it out. "We know it will be extremely difficult, but we have shown that we can play well. The opponent will press us. But we must close the spaces and create opportunities. It will be tougher here than in Istanbul against Galatasaray. We would like to score points," he concluded.
