Pau Cubarsí scored his first official goal with FC Barcelona on Tuesday. In his 63rd match, the 18-year-old center-back scored the equalizer at 2-2 against Atlético de Madrid on a night full of emotions in Montjuïc.
FC Barcelona drew against Atlético de Madrid (4-4) on a historic night for Pau Cubarsí. The blaugrana center-back scored his first official goal with the team in his 63rd match with the first team. At 18 years and 34 days old, the academy player also scored his first goal as a professional footballer, as he had not registered any goals in the club's youth teams or with Spain.
The match had started in the worst way for Barça, with a goal from Julián Álvarez just 47 seconds in. The '2' managed to slightly deflect the ball in his attempt to block the Argentine's shot, which ended up slipping past Szczesny at the near post. To make matters worse, Antoine Griezmann made it 0-2 in the 6th minute, but Hansi Flick's team reacted in the 19th minute with a stunning goal from Pedri.
A couple of minutes later, Cubarsí got his personal revenge. The defender won the duel against Pablo Barrios after a corner taken by Raphinha from the right and, with a header, he fired past Musso to level the score at 2-2 in a crazy 21 minutes. Barça would repeat the formula 20 minutes later, this time with Iñigo Martínez heading in unmarked in front of the 'rojiblanco' goalkeeper. Pau had a direct involvement in the Basque's goal, drawing two Atlético players to free up his teammate.
Cubarsí celebrated his first goal with Barça with passion
The celebration of the 18-year-old center-back after scoring was furious, shouting exuberantly and, amidst the excitement, he ended up on the ground after colliding with Lamine. The blaugrana party seemed complete after the break, even more so when Robert Lewandowski scored the fourth in the 74th minute. Unfortunately, Diego Simeone's team reacted again in the final stretch and, with goals from Marcos Llorente and Alexander Sorloth, they salvaged a draw in stoppage time (4-4).
From a possible rout, it turned into a tie in the last ten minutes, a result that leaves the tie completely open for the return leg at the Metropolitano on April 2. Still, for Pau Cubarsí, February 25 will be an unforgettable and historic night, beyond the bittersweet taste left by the result. The defender has 4 assists with the first team since his debut in January 2024.
After the match, the defender assured 'Movistar+' that "I was waiting for that goal and I kissed the shield because Barça is the club of my life." Regarding the match, the '2' valued "the great level of the team" to overcome the initial 0-2, although he regretted the disconnection in the initial ten minutes and, again, in the final stretch of the match. "We are angry about the last ten minutes that the team has played, we have not been at our level. We deserve the draw," he said.
