FC Barcelona has decided not to apply the penalty clauses stipulated in its contract with the Turkish company Limak, in charge of the remodeling works of the Spotify Camp Nou, despite the significant delays accumulated in the execution schedule.

Although the original agreement contemplated financial penalties of up to one million euros per day of delay from November 29, 2024, the club considers that there are force majeure causes —such as heavy rains, administrative delays, and logistical changes— that justify the breach without direct responsibility of the construction company.

Both parties have agreed to a revision of the schedule, which has allowed maintaining a fluid collaboration relationship without contractual ruptures or coercive measures for now.

Delays in the remodeling of the Camp Nou

The expected celebration of the 125th anniversary of FC Barcelona in the renovated Camp Nou did not materialize as planned. The unforeseen events have postponed the completion of the works, forcing the club to extend their stay at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys until the end of the 2024-25 season, leaving the date of return to the Les Corts stadium for the 2025-26 season.

Penalty clauses not executed

According to the contract signed with Limak Construction, the Turkish company in charge of the renovation, a penalty of one million euros was stipulated for each day of delay from November 29, 2024, the agreed date for the return to the Camp Nou.

To date, 142 days have passed since that date, which could translate into a sanction of 142 million euros. However, the club has decided not to execute said penalty.

Arguments of FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona maintains that the delays in the works are not directly attributable to Limak. Factors such as the heavy rains of November 2024 and administrative obstacles, which prevented extending working hours until March 24, have contributed to the delays.

In addition, both parties have agreed on new delivery dates, which, according to the club, invalidates the immediate application of the penalties stipulated in the contract.

Relationship between Barça and Limak

Despite the delays, the relationship between FC Barcelona and Limak remains cordial. Recently, the president of Limak, Nihat Özdemir, visited the box of Montjuïc during the match between Barça and Borussia Dortmund.

The following day, Özdemir and the president of Barça, Joan Laporta, made a joint visit to the works of the Camp Nou, evidencing the good harmony between both entities.

Future perspectives

FC Barcelona does not rule out applying the penalties in the future if new unjustified delays occur. For now, the club is confident that the works will advance according to the new agreed schedule and that the stadium will be ready to welcome the fans on the scheduled date.
