Between relapses and fierce competition, he has lost prominence. Now, with the summer market approaching, his name is back on the table
Andreas Christensen has had an extremely tough 2024-25 season. The Danish defender has barely been able to play a scant 27 minutes this season, all of them on the opening day of LaLiga EA Sports against Valencia CF (1-2) at Mestalla. Since then, his name has spent more time in the medical reports than on the call-up sheets.
What started as a simple discomfort in the Achilles tendon ended up becoming an ordeal that left him out for more than five months. That injury, in addition, opened space for the Blaugrana team to register Dani Olmo, a move that avoided administrative headaches, although it meant losing a key piece to give depth to the culé defensive plot.
A recovery marked by relapses
When he was medically discharged in January, it seemed that the return of Andreas Christensen was imminent. However, the story took a new turn: problems in the soleus muscle left him in dry dock again. In mid-February he was declared 'fit' again, but his real return was ephemeral. On March 1, new medical report and same area affected. Another step back.
It wasn't until April 5 that he was given the green light to enter call-ups again, and although he has been included in the last three lists of Hansi Flick, he has not yet been taken into account to see minutes again with the elastic of the Catalan club. The '15' is already training with the group, but without competitive rhythm or filming, his situation remains complicated.

Fierce competition and the clock against him
As of today, Andreas Christensen has ahead of him Ronald Araujo, Pau Cubarsí, Iñigo Martínez and Jules Koundé, in addition to an Eric García who has also successfully assumed his role as an alternative in the pivot. The one from Allerød, meanwhile, watches from the sidelines.
With FC Barcelona immersed in the decisive stretch of the season, fighting for LaLiga, Champions League and Copa del Rey, it does not seem the best time to experiment. The German coach prefers to bet on those who arrive with rhythm and without physical doubts. Perhaps, if the domestic championship is on track and the coaching staff can rotate in the last days, Andreas could have his opportunity.
Christensen's future at Barcelona: Continuity or transfer in the summer?
Christensen's contract expires in 2026, and his name is among the players whose continuity will be evaluated by Deco and the sports management. No decisions have been made yet, but his current situation invites reflection.
Since his arrival in 2022, he has alternated good moments with episodes of physical irregularity. His first year left good feelings: hierarchy, solidity and quality in the ball output. He even came to perform as a pivot when the urgencies demanded it.
But right now, his role in the team is testimonial. And although in football everything can change in a matter of weeks - an unexpected absence, an opportunity that appears out of nowhere - the truth is that Andreas is living a season that has slipped through his hands.
