Ansu Fati runs out of options for the end of the season

The situation of Ansu Fati with FC Barcelona is becoming dramatic for the 22-year-old player in 2025. The player from Bissau has been completely sidelined from Hansi Flick's plans for the final stretch of the 2024-25 season, where the German coach has recovered almost the entire squad. The '10' has, in fact, been left out for 10 of the 19 matches played by Barça this year, despite not suffering any muscle injury.

In this sense, the player's environment feels disappointed, as the forward preferred to stay in January to fight for an opportunity that still hasn't come. Meanwhile, the Barça board is also concerned about his case, as the winger is a fixed discard for next season, but his poor current form complicates the mission of finding him a team next summer.

Fati already went on loan to Brighton last season, with a rather troubled stint in the Premier League. The club's idea is to renew his contract for two or three more years (it ends in 2027) to reduce his salary (14 million euros gross per year), a key factor for negotiating his loan to another team in the upcoming transfer window. However, if he does not play in the last two months of the 24-25 season, the scenario will be much more complex come July.

Hansi Flick, blunt about the 'Ansu case'

In the press conference before the match against Girona, Hansi Flick again referred to the case of the Barça winger. The coach made it clear that, while the '10' continues to train with the group, he has not shown the intensity of other teammates. This, combined with the fierce competition for a spot in attack, has marginalized him from the coaching staff's plans this 2025.

"We will see if it is possible or not (to give him more minutes). If we need him, he will come in. This is not an easy situation for him. Pau Víctor, Pablo Torre also have fantastic training sessions and that is what I am looking for, for them to train hard and give their all. This is the player's job and that is all I have to say about it," Flick pointed out.

Ansu Fati has gone three months without playing with Barça

So far, Ansu Fati has only accumulated 187 minutes of action spread over 8 appearances. The forward only played 28 minutes against Barbastro (0-4 in the Cup) on January 4. After that, he was left out of the squad for the rest of the tournament matches, as well as in the Supercopa de España. In La Liga, he has remained on the bench in 4 of the 9 matchdays played this year (he was left out of the list in 5 matches).

In fact, his last appearance in the tournament was on matchday 13 against Real Sociedad (he played 21 minutes in the 1-0 defeat), on November 10 at Anoeta. Previously, he had accumulated minutes against Alavés (0-3) and Espanyol (3-1), with the match against Sevilla (5-1) being his only start of the entire season. In the Champions League, he accumulated residual minutes only in the first three matchdays of the group stage.
