Andreas Christensen continues to slowly recover from his tendinopathy in his left leg. The Dane is having an unprecedented season, only playing 26 minutes against Valencia in FC Barcelona's debut in LaLiga 2024-25 before entering the Barça infirmary.
The doctors advised him to stop to avoid a more serious problem that, in the end, ended up developing. Finally, the 28-year-old player has undergone surgery and after three months out, the uncertainty about his physical condition was total. Luckily, Christensen has given an interview to the club's media and has explained in first person all the details of his recovery.
'I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel'
Christensen has been away from the squad to focus on his recovery. A process that, according to the player himself, is progressing as expected: “We have performed a mini-surgery. It is so minor that it can be considered a clean-up. It should not affect my return time. If it does, in fact, it will speed it up. I don’t want to put pressure on myself, but I feel that we are going in the right direction,” explained the defender.
"We work hard, do a lot of treatment to regain confidence and feel comfortable with different movements. I feel like I'm on the right path to get back to 100%"
Andreas is going through the stages to make his comeback with the best guarantees. But as the player himself has admitted, it is not a pleasant path: “I am not enjoying it, but I am looking forward to facing each day to get back with the team. Every day is one day less.” The centre-back's goal is to return to normality and be one more in Hansi Flick's squad. “There are many games and everyone will have opportunities,” he confessed.
Christensen could make his comeback in January 2025
After several months with no news about his recovery, the Dane was forced to undergo surgery, a situation that further extends his time out. The player is expected to be out for two more months, so his return is expected at the end of January 2025
Until today, the footballer had been undergoing conservative treatment to heal his tendinopathy in the left Achilles, but after consulting a doctor in Sweden, Christensen made the decision, in coordination with the club's medical services, to undergo a simple and small operation to reduce the pain.
Will he have a place in the Barça XI?
The overbooking in the centre of the FC Barcelona defence complicates his presence in the team, so, as of today, his renewal is on hold and there is even speculation about the possibility of listening to offers as long as both parties benefit.
Christensen, who landed in Barcelona in 2022 and is linked to the club until 2026, has performed at a regular level since his arrival and the Catalans are satisfied with his professionalism. However, Hansi Flick's ideal duo would be Pau Cubarsí and Ronald Araújo, while Iñigo Martínez has earned a place in the squad and his renewal is a fact.
So far, Andreas has not wanted to listen to offers and has made it clear that his intention is to continue wearing the Barça shirt. Despite this, his decision could change due to the lack of minutes and he is relegated to the bench.
Since joining the club in 2022 (he signed for free after his time at Chelsea), Andreas has played a total of 75 official matches (5,150 minutes) in which he has scored 4 goals and provided 3 assists. The '15' has never been an undisputed starter, but he has always responded when the team has needed him.
