Fermín López spoke with 'SPORT' about his current situation at FC Barcelona. The midfielder expressed gratitude for the club's trust and hopes to continue helping the team win everything.
FC Barcelona will not be able to count on Fermín López due to suspension for the match next Monday against Rayo in Montjuïc. While he awaits to be available again for Hans Flick's team, the 21-year-old player reflected in an interview with 'SPORT' on his time with the first team. For the '16', having the trust of the management and coaching staff has been key to seizing every opportunity on the field.
"Deco has always trusted me. I wasn’t aware of the offers because I knew I wanted to be here, but it is reassuring that the club didn’t want to listen to them and wanted me here, in the new project," commented the player from Huelva. He also thanked Xavi Hernández and Hansi Flick for their support along with the Blaugrana sporting director. "They are giving me confidence to show my football. I am very grateful to them."
In this sense, he acknowledged that from the beginning, he has fought to constantly assert himself and seize every opportunity. "I have always kept a low profile. I try to do my job, and when the coach gives me minutes, I just try to help the team." At the same time, he valued having taken a different path than the others, perhaps much more difficult, to reach the first team. "I will never stop working to continue being here," he added.
Fermín, happy to keep scoring goals with Barça
And regarding his performance in the 2024/25 season, Fermín referred to one of his main virtues: his goal-scoring instinct. The midfielder has already scored 16 goals in 67 official matches with Barça. The last 2 were scored in consecutive matches against Valencia and Sevilla, bringing him to 5 goals for the season. Additionally, López had just completed a fantastic tournament with Spain at the Olympic Games, where he scored 6 goals.
"It’s true that I have always had that ability to get into the area and finish well. The first part of the season didn’t go so well for me, but now I have more confidence, the coach is giving me more opportunities," pointed out the player from El Campillo, who also made it clear that, beyond the controversial refereeing decisions, there is no choice but to move on after experiencing the first red card of his career. "These things happen. You have to learn from them and keep working."
