Alarm bells are ringing at FC Barcelona. The club's sporting director, Deco, is reportedly considering leaving the Blaugrana team, due to the exhaustion of taking charge of a club with so many financial limitations

Calendar of FC Barcelona

Deco is reportedly thinking about resigning from FC Barcelona. The sporting director is reportedly exhausted and tired of the club's president, Joan Laporta, who has not been able to keep the promises he made to him when he arrived at the club in 2023. The financial situation of the Catalan club has made his job difficult, which has been questioned throughout Europe, especially this summer when he was only able to sign Dani Olmo.

When he took on the position proposed to him by Laporta in the spring of 2023, Deco uttered one of his most famous phrases: "I am the poorest sporting director in Europe," while waiting to meet with a player agent. Initially, his position was about collaborating with Mateo Alemany and then he took over his duties when he resigned after problems with the club's president. At that time, the club was fighting against 'fair play' and they are still doing so.

Laporta has not fulfilled his promise to Deco

Since his arrival, Deco took on his role aware of the club's financial difficulties, but believing in Laporta's word that everything would be fixed. So far, this has not been the case. And what seemed like a setback has become a hole full of problems that seem to repeat themselves year after year. The Portuguese's first objective was "not to have a worse team than last year", but it was extremely difficult for him to achieve.

In the winter market, Barcelona signed Vitor Roque for 30 million euros plus 31 in variables. This summer he was loaned to Real Betis after spending six months in Barcelona, where he failed to gain the trust of either Xavi Hernández or Hansi Flick, because he did not have the necessary level for a top European team. Nobody in the sports management seems to want to take responsibility for this error and Deco has said that the transfer was done when he arrived at the club.

Meanwhile, and according to reports from 'SPORT', Laporta continued to promise Deco that the situation would change and that they would get the money to return to the 1:1 rule. In this way, the Portuguese could do his job in a similar way to other sporting directors in Europe. In the meantime, the director continued to work with what he could, losing important signings such as Arda Güler to Real Madrid and in that process, his work began to be questioned.

The most questioned sporting director in Europe

Without a doubt, Deco has been questioned a lot for his decisions and the impossibility of signing more players this summer. He has done everything he could based on his abilities and it still has not been enough. It is a big club that cannot function as such due to financial problems. This has caused rival clubs to not want to do business with Barça and many players do not want to go to Barcelona due to things like the impossibility of signing Dani Olmo when he arrived at the team.

Olmo was precisely the only signing that the Portuguese was able to make this summer. And he was only able to do so because both the player and his former club, RB Leipzig, were willing to accept almost all the deferred payments so that he would not sign for Bayern Munich, who were also interested. The sales were not what he expected according to his plan either, because his two main objectives to leave, Ronald Araújo and Frenkie de Jong, were injured and prevented him from freeing up wages.

All this led them to get rid of Ilkay Gündogan, who was given a free pass to return to Manchester City, despite the fact that he had a contract with the club until 2025. All this generated more questions from the press and fans, who did not understand the decision to give away one of their best players.

Will Deco stay at Barcelona?

The last few months have been extremely hard for Deco. Negotiating with other clubs, with agents and with his own players has been complex and having to win the internal war with the technical secretariat of Barça did not make it easier for a person who stands out for being very direct and without filters. All this would have exhausted the Portuguese, who would be disappointed with the financial limitations and by Laporta's lack of word in fulfilling the promises he made to him.

At the moment, he is not sure whether he will continue at Barcelona and agents have said that he wants to leave his position because he has never had the opportunity to act with total freedom, as he should in a team as big as this one. He will go on holiday and is expected to make a decision soon about his future, which could be away from Barcelona.
