RFEF releases Pau Cubarsí to start his injury recovery
FC Barcelona remains on standby regarding the exact extent of the recent physical setback suffered by Pau Cubarsí. It is important to remember that the Estanyol native had to leave the match between Spain and the Netherlands (2-2) in the UEFA Nations League after feeling discomfort in his right ankle, triggering all kinds of alarms about a possible serious injury. This incident has led the RFEF to release the player so he can start his recovery process as soon as possible.
Next, the statement from the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announcing the decision to release Pau Cubarsí:
"After the tests carried out by the Medical Services, it has been decided that the player returns to his club, FC Barcelona, to begin recovery for the discomfort he has in his right ankle, which prevented him from finishing the match against the Netherlands at 'De Kuip' stadium in Rotterdam."
Although it was not planned for Cubarsí to leave the dynamics of 'La Roja', as the national team was confident that Pau would be part of the expedition traveling to Valencia to face the second leg of the quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League 2024-25 against the Netherlands (23/03), reality has turned out differently. The defender has been removed from the squad so that he can travel to the City of Barcelona and start the necessary treatment for his ailment.
Various sources agree that, although Cubarsí has discomfort in his right ankle, there are no signs of a serious injury. Now, what will need to be assessed is how this physical setback of Pau evolves and how it could affect his performance at FC Barcelona, especially looking ahead to the club's nearest commitment: the match on March 27 against CA Osasuna.
The absence of Pau Cubarsí would be a serious headache for FC Barcelona
It is important to note that for the match against Osasuna, Barcelona arrives weakened and with few defensive solutions. The Culé team has Iñigo Martínez and Andreas Christensen injured and Ronald Araujo, likely absent due to his call-up with the Uruguayan national team. If 'Cuba's' absence is added, the natural options to populate the center of defense would be reduced only to Eric García.
In this context, Hansi Flick would have to resort to the youth academy to seek alternatives, such as Sergi Domínguez, who already knows what it is like to play with the first team. Or consider using Jules Koundé as a central defender situationally, having to find another option to cover the right-back position, possibly Héctor Fort.
