FC Barcelona seeks the renewal of Hansi Flick to give continuity to its successful sports project
If there is a member of the FC Barcelona squad who gives the impression of having earned his renewal outright, it is their coach Hansi Flick. The German coach arrived at the beginning of the 2024-25 season as a clear bet by the Azulgrana sports management to revitalize the Culé sports project.
However, it must be remembered that, at the time, his incorporation generated certain doubts. Although at Bayern Munich he proved to be one of the best coaches in the world, his failed spell in charge of the German national team slightly tarnished his candidacy.
However, FC Barcelona's bet has been outstanding. At this point in the season, Barça has already won a title, the 2025 Spanish Super Cup, and is in the fight for everything: they lead LaLiga EA Sports with 66 points, will play the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid on April 26, and have one foot in the 'semis' of the UEFA Champions League, after a resounding 4-0 in the first leg of the quarter-finals against Borussia Dortmund.
Beyond the results, Hansi Flick has managed to imbue the team with its own identity. Barcelona has become a lethal team offensively, capable of alternating between fast transitions and controlled possessions to attack. Defensively, it is a balanced combination, which presses intensely after losing possession, but also maintains order at the back, avoiding fissures.
Flick's commitment to the Barcelona project
Given this situation, and especially valuing the commitment that Hansi Flick has made to the players of La Masia, it is not surprising that FC Barcelona wants to prolong his continuity. The bond between the coach and the club, both on a sporting and personal level, seems stronger than ever. The renewal is already in the process of being finalized.
In the press conference prior to the match against CD Leganés, the German coach spoke openly about his situation and his feelings regarding the club and the city: "My answer will be more extensive and thus we leave this topic. I really appreciate and enjoy what I have here. I have a fantastic staff, my assistants are incredible, the physios, doctors... The players are very professional and train very hard, with a mentality of improving day by day. This is unique in my career. The atmosphere is fantastic. This is a family. All the club employees are fantastic. Also, I have a good time, I enjoy Barcelona and the people. I am very happy living here, together with my wife," he began by saying.
He also acknowledged that, while he sees himself as the coach of Barça in the immediate future, he does not plan to commit for many years: "It is a new experience. So I have a lot of energy, I have energy left and I am thinking about what we can do to improve because there is a lot of potential. Now we are starting this project and what is happening is fantastic. I am not a coach who wants to sign 3 more years and think that I have the future assured," he added.
A future year by year: Flick's mentality
Flick made it clear that, if the good harmony with the club continues and the project continues to grow, he does not rule out renewing, but always under his philosophy of going "step by step": "I have my own mentality, I like to work for this club, the best in the world, and I appreciate a lot what I have. I know the situation of the club and it is not easy. That is the situation now, one year and we will see what happens, step by step, year by year. If we continue to be happy, one more year. I would like to finish the work I do with a good grade. If my assistants are happy, I am too. We have to stay focused as until now and focus on what is left of the season. Now Leganés, then Dortmund... that is how I want to work," he concluded.
The board is already making a move: renewal until 2027 on the way
In parallel, information has emerged from media such as 'RAC1', which advance that the sports summit would be willing to extend the coach's contract until 2027. Although he has been offered more years, the coach prefers to renew year by year, evaluating the state of the project course by course. Even, as indicated in the aforementioned source and hinted by Flick himself in his statements, it is not ruled out that this will be his last experience on the bench.
That is not yet entirely clear. What does seem to be somewhat more certain is that the renewal, although it does not generate urgency, is already in process. If it materializes, it would be made official at the end of the season, since both the coach and the club are focused on the current sporting situation of the team and on closing the course in the best possible way.
