Pedri González reviewed, in an interview for 'EFE', the keys to his great performance in 24/25 with FC Barcelona, as well as his new role as one of the leaders of the team

Calendar of FC Barcelona

The 2024/25 season of FC Barcelona has been outstanding in terms of the game displayed by Hansi Flick's team and the brutal offensive production of the squad. Although the number of goals and assists from Pedri González (4G, 6A) is not dazzling, the work of the Spanish international in midfield, as a second pivot/interior, is essential to explain the remarkable collective improvement of the team.

In a chat with 'EFE', the player from Tegueste acknowledged the importance of the physical work done this season to take a step forward. "It doesn't mean that the other way of training was wrong, it's just that personally it suits me very well," explained the '8'. In that sense, he stated that the mission the coach usually assigns him is to maintain possession to convey calm to the team and, from there, generate goal opportunities, a task he has performed with flying colors so far.

This season, Pedri is the leader in pre-assists in the major European leagues and the second midfielder with the most passes made (1,323) and completed (1,166) in LaLiga, registering an 88.13% success rate. Additionally, in just 35 matches, he already has 6 assists, his highest with Barça in a season and just 1 away from the 7 he provided with Las Palmas in 2019/20. So far in 24/25, he has only missed one match due to a flu virus (against Valencia) and has already surpassed the 2,700 minutes played mark.

Pedri, happy to assume a leadership role on and off the field

Regarding this, Pedri stated that, for him, the best thing is to play all the time, as his body "struggles more to get going when he stops for one or two weeks." Likewise, he expressed his happiness at being one of the leaders in a locker room full of youth. "There are many young players, and by virtue of my experience, I should be one of the leaders. I like being one, it's a role that doesn't scare me at all. I just want to face it to try to help Barça win titles," explained the '8'.

And about his position as a double pivot, he also expressed his satisfaction with being able to have more impact in the position. "I touch a lot of balls, the game goes through me. I feel more comfortable and have learned how to position myself better in defensive duties," pointed out the player from Tegueste. Alongside Marc Casadó and Frenkie de Jong, the Canary has looked very comfortable, being the brain of a Barça that aims to win it all in 2025.
