Robert Lewandowski has already achieved his best scoring season with FC Barcelona. In just 37 matches, the 36-year-old forward surpassed his previous record with the club, which was 33 goals in the 2022/23 season, his debut year in LaLiga. Although he is still far from the 55 goals he scored with Bayern Munich in the 2019/20 season (his best season in Europe so far), the Pole remains in 'legend mode' and could reach similar records by the end of May.
Against Real Sociedad (4-0), 'Lewy' had another discreet afternoon, but he was able to contribute to the scoreline by doing what he does best: being lethal inside the area. In the 60th minute, the forward deflected a long-range shot from Ronald Araujo, who had just scored four minutes earlier, to beat Remiro again and close another Blaugrana rout, the 18th of the season.
Additionally, the '9' had the luxury of extending his lead in the LaLiga top scorers' ranking. Robert has 21 goals in 25 matches played, four more than Kylian Mbappé (17). The Pole, however, wasted a clear opportunity in the 79th minute, heading wide a cross from Lamine Yamal that found him alone in the small area. Lewandowski usually does not miss those kinds of chances, but there have been several similar misses in recent weeks.
Lewandowski will seek to regain the scoring lead in the Champions League
Even so, the experienced attacker is just a couple of goals away from matching the 23 he scored to win the Pichichi in LaLiga two years ago. The 'killer's' scoring average is remarkable, at 0.91, reminiscent of his best years in Germany. After a disappointing 23/24 season, where he could only score 26 goals, 'Lewy' has returned to his best version under Hansi Flick's orders.
"It is always important for him to score goals, and today he had some luck, but we are happy", said the coach after the rout against Real. Now, Robert will return this week to the Champions League, a tournament where he finished the group stage as the top scorer, with 9 goals. Serhou Guirassy took advantage of the 'play-off' with Borussia Dortmund to take the lead with 10 goals, but the Barça forward is ready to reclaim the throne against Benfica, a team he already scored a double against (two penalties) in the group stage.
⚽So far, Lewandowski's 34 goals in the 2024/25 season are distributed as follows:
- 21 goals in 25 matches of LaLiga (2,017 minutes).
- 9 goals in 8 matches of the UEFA Champions League (638 minutes).
- 3 goals in 2 matches of the Copa del Rey (84 minutes).
- 1 goal in 2 matches of the Supercopa de España (163 minutes).
