Iñigo Martínez spoke with 'SPORT' about the current situation at FC Barcelona. For the Basque central defender, the best thing about working with Hansi Flick is having a clear game plan, beyond the risks that the team runs at the back

Calendar of FC Barcelona

The arrival of Hansi Flick was a turning point for Iñigo Martínez at FC Barcelona. The Basque was one of Xavi Hernández's discards for 2024/25, but thanks to the confidence of the German coach and the loss of Ronald Araújo, he has established himself in the Barça XI, showing great form alongside Pau Cubarsí.

At the moment, the one from Ondarroa has already added 1,146 minutes of action in 13 games (10 in the League and 3 in the Champions League), all as a starter. The former Athletic Club defender only rested against Osasuna, curiously the only defeat that Barça has recorded so far in LaLiga.

Iñigo, very comfortable with Hansi Flick's offensive scheme

In a talk with 'SPORT', Iñigo opened up about the great work he has been doing in 2024/25 under the orders of the German coach, whom he praised for his offensive style and the clarity of his scheme. For the '5', beyond the risks that the team takes by pressing with such high lines, there are many more benefits that are obtained from this tactical stoppage.

"We do a lot of damage every time we steal and the fact that the opponent is offside many times tends to be difficult for them. It was seen in the last game (the Clásico). We enjoy it. Behind us there is little enjoyment, to be honest, but we enjoyed something," the experienced Spanish defender commented with a laugh.

For Iñigo Martínez, the 'suffering' is worth it in this Barça

In that sense, he also recognized the difficulty of having so much field behind him, with very fast forwards in front of him. "Of course you suffer, it's not easy. But, when you get together that well, the four at the back are completely sure that they will be caught offside nine times out of ten.

For this reason, Martínez believes that there is no reason to touch anything in a team that is increasingly showing greater confidence on the field. "We take risks, that is our way of playing. We are doing well and we will continue like this," the Basque said in an interview prior to the first Catalan derby of the season, against Espanyol.
