Jules Koundé has established himself as one of the indispensable players in Hansi Flick's scheme at Barça; However, the obvious lack of rotation could pose a real physical problem for the Frenchman
If there is one name that Hansi Flick has blindly trusted in this 2024/25 season, it is Jules Koundé. The Parisian defender gives the impression of having gallantly accepted his role as a right-back, becoming the one tasked with defending that flank. He has notably improved both in his defensive duties, being an almost impenetrable wall, and in his offensive contributions. Additionally, he complements Lamine Yamal, the other key player in that wing.
The German coach's trust in Koundé is not just talk. A statistical fact backs this trust: to date, Jules is the only player from FC Barcelona who has played every possible minute. Currently, he has started in ten matches, which amounts to 900 minutes played. Truly remarkable.
However, there is a particularity in Koundé's case. He is also a key starter in Didier Deschamps' system in the French national team. During the last FIFA international break in September, he featured in both games France played in the UEFA Nations League, with 12 minutes in the 1-3 defeat against Italy (matchday 1) and the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 victory over Belgium (matchday 2).
Does Jules Koundé need a rest period?
The trust of Deschamps in the French defender is a point in favor highlighting the player's work as a right-back, but it raises a big question for Barça: when can Jules Koundé take a well-deserved break? With the number of games he has played and adding international commitments, it is crucial to find the right time for him to rest.
This issue is particularly concerning, despite Koundé demonstrating optimal physical fitness and following a strict training routine. Barcelona must find a way to give him rest, considering the packed schedule of games and competitions. It is essential that he is part of the rotation that Hansi Flick practices with his most used players.
At this point, the French national team's collaboration is crucial. Although he has been called up for the matches against Israel (10/10) and Belgium (14/10) in the UEFA Nations League, reducing the physical load on Koundé is necessary. Additionally, the Blaugrana must consider alternatives to replace him in a game, a responsibility that will likely fall on Héctor Fort, who still needs to gain more importance in the German coach's sports planning.
