The return of FC Barcelona to the Spotify Camp Nou will take longer than expected; The state of the grass and the VIP boxes postpone the expected return to the culé temple

Calendar of FC Barcelona

The long-awaited return of FC Barcelona to the renovated Spotify Camp Nou, initially scheduled for this year, has been postponed until February 2025. The board, led by Joan Laporta, had planned for the team to return to its stadium before the end of the year, but Various setbacks have made this not possible.

In fact, the club has already put tickets on sale for the Champions League match against Atalanta, next January 29, at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, which confirms that the team will continue playing there at least until that date.

The club's vice president and person in charge of the Espai Barça project, Elena Fort, explained a month ago that the initial intention was for the team to play a match at the Spotify Camp Nou before the end of the year. However, he acknowledged the possibility of a delay due to the complexity of the works and the logistics necessary to guarantee the definitive return.

A definitive return, without two stadiums

In this regard, Joan Centelles, director of operations at Espai Barça, reaffirmed that the return to the Camp Nou will be definitive: “Once we return to the Camp Nou it will be forever, not for a match. We will not have two stadiums open." This responds to the logistical difficulty of managing member access and guarantees that, when the team returns to its stadium, it will not have to return to Montjuïc.

Despite the efforts, the works have had significant delays. Sources close to the club point out that there is still important work to be completed, especially on the grass and VIP boxes. Although it was expected to begin installing the seats in November, it has not yet been possible due to the machinery and materials that occupy the area.

In addition, the club has requested an extension from the managers of the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium until March as a precautionary measure.

According to Lluís Moya, director of Espai Barça, in the “pessimistic forecast”, the stadium could be ready in March, although other delays are not ruled out. Barcelona could even find it necessary to play the first matches of the next LaLiga season in Montjuïc if the works are not completed in the summer.

Progress outside Spotify Camp Nou

Despite the internal complications, the works abroad are progressing at a better pace. Work is currently underway to level the ground, which is approximately 50% of the planned height. Likewise, it is expected that this area, where the boulevard that is part of the Espai Barça will be, will reach street level in February or March.

In this sense, the board assumes that, once the works are completed, the renovated Spotify Camp Nou will become a reference space for the club and its fans. However, the return to the culé temple is on hold until conditions are optimal for the team and the fans.
