The renewal of Szczęsny with FC Barcelona: an agreement increasingly close to being finalized

Calendar of FC Barcelona

The future of Wojciech Szczęsny seems to be increasingly linked to FC Barcelona. And how could it not be? The Polish goalkeeper, at 34 years old, has perfectly fit into the club in the Catalan city, bringing his experience, security, and leadership between the posts, making the absence of German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen barely noticeable.

In light of this, it is not surprising that, according to several media reports, FC Barcelona wants to ensure they have 'Tek' for one more season, thus forming a stellar duo alongside the German goalkeeper. This decision has the full backing of the club's sports management and seemed to be stalled only due to uncertainty about Wojciech Szczęsny's desires, as it was unclear whether the Warsaw native felt ready or had an interest in continuing for another year with the Catalan team.

Szczęsny has reportedly given the green light to renew with Barcelona

However, this uncertainty seems to have reached its conclusion. According to reports from the program 'Què t'hi jugues!' on SER, Szczęsny has given the go-ahead to stay for one more season as a culé.

This decision had already been hinted at recently by the player's agent, Joshua Barnett, who stated: "'Tek' is delighted in Barcelona and Barça is very happy with 'Tek', so we will easily come to an agreement. When the time comes, we will understand each other quickly and there will be no problem for him to renew his contract".

Despite both parties being aligned to finalize this agreement, there are still some discussions left to shape the deal definitively. This would ensure Szczęsny's continuity at FC Barcelona, opening the door to exciting competition between two top-level goalkeepers. With 'Tek' maintaining a stellar level and being key to the team's positive results, Ter Stegen will not have it easy to take the starting position away from him.

And what about the future of Iñaki Peña after this decision?

At this point, it is evident that if Szczęsny continues for one more season as a culé, it likely paves the way for the farewell of Iñaki Peña. His situation as the third goalkeeper, with few opportunities to play, would not be the most favorable. With a contract until June 30, 2026, and interest from several top-flight clubs in making him their starting goalkeeper, his stay at Barcelona seems complicated.
