The Polish goalkeeper has not yet made his debut with FC Barcelona and the second half of the season will determine whether he will remain linked to the club or not

Calendar of FC Barcelona

Wojciech Szczesny's arrival at Barça came after Ter Stegen's patellar tendon in his right knee was torn at the end of September, in a Villarreal-Barça game. Given the lack of players, the technical secretariat looked for a competitor for Iñaki Peña. After searching the market, the chosen option was the Pole, who had talks about signing for the Catalan club with Robert Lewandowski, a key figure in his signing. Despite the fact that he was returning from retirement, it was expected that he would be the starting goalkeeper. However, several months have passed since he arrived and he has not yet played in the goal on any occasion.

Against Barbastro, on January 4 in the Copa del Rey, he is expected to make his debut as a Barça player. Thus, six vital months will begin for the future of his career. If he manages to take the position from Iñaki Peña, it is possible that the club will end up offering him a renewal. However, if that is not the case, it is almost certain that he will leave on a free transfer or that he will hang up his boots again, as he had already done this summer.

An unbeatable attitude despite the lack of minutes

Szczesny is a footballer with a magnificent sporting reputation. He defended the goal of leading clubs in Europe, such as Arsenal, Roma or Juventus. Wherever he went, he managed to play a great role and was very popular. In fact, his importance in both Italian clubs led him to say, in a humorous tone, his legendary quote: "I sat Alisson and now my substitute is Buffon, probably, I am the best in history." Likewise, his jokes and his good nature have made him a player very appreciated by his teammates and fans.

However, at Barça he is in a new situation for him. He arrived in October and, a priori, will play his first match in January. That is three months without playing. His last professional game was on June 21, in Poland's 1-3 defeat by Austria at the European Championships. Half a year, with a retirement in between, he didn't play a single official minute. Despite this, he has never put on a bad face or made any controversial statements, he has dedicated himself to working and publicly supporting Hansi Flick's decision not to let him play. A true professional.
