FC Barcelona is immersed in a real 'soap opera' with Dani Olmo, which beyond leaving its image as an institution resentful, could mean a significant economic loss for them
The FC Barcelona has started the year 2025 facing a serious setback that, so far, it has not been able to resolve. The Catalan team has suffered the loss of Dani Olmo, whose registration is no longer valid with LaLiga as of January 1st.
It is worth mentioning that Dani Olmo was registered only for a part of the 2024-25 season, taking advantage of the long-term injury of Andreas Christensen. The Barcelona invoked Article 77 of the Rules for the Preparation of LaLiga Budgets (NEP), which allows using 80% of the Salary Cost of an injured player and 2% of the Inscribable Sportive Squad Cost Limit assigned by the La Liga Validation Body, to register another player.
However, this solution to the problem of Dani Olmo's registration was only temporary, as this 'escape route' was valid only until December 31st. At that time, the Catalan club was confident in finding the necessary mechanisms to free up space in the wage bill and keep Dani Olmo's registration active.
The remaining option for Barcelona to solve Dani Olmo's registration
Now, as the deadline approaches, the worst-case scenario has materialized: Dani Olmo is no longer listed as a Barcelona player. Apparently, the only remaining option for the club to resolve this situation is to receive all the official payment confirmations attached in the sale contract of the VIP seats at the future Spotify Camp Nou.
According to 'SPORT', this matter must be resolved before Friday, January 3rd so that, if the financial project meets the economic requirements, and having been submitted before the deadline, Dani Olmo can regain his status as a player of Barcelona.
Why can't Barcelona re-register Dani Olmo this 2024-25 season?
In the event that the validation of the VIP seats issue is not effective, Barcelona will definitively lose Dani Olmo. Despite having a contract until 2030, in this scenario, Dani Olmo could not be registered for the rest of the 2024-25 season, due to Article 130 of the RFEF, which states: "A player can be registered with only one team from a club, without the possibility of being deregistered and registered by the same team during the same season, except in cases of force majeure or regulatory provision. Also, during the season, he/she cannot be registered and line up for more than three different teams."
In this scenario, if Dani Olmo cannot be re-registered as a Barcelona player for the remainder of the 2024-25 season, his contract includes a clause allowing him to leave as a free agent this winter, which would be catastrophic for the Barcelona team both in terms of sports and economics.
The million-dollar losses Barcelona would suffer with Dani Olmo's departure
The premature departure of Dani Olmo would represent million-dollar losses for FC Barcelona for various reasons. For example, the club still owes approximately €48 million corresponding to the fixed contract signed last summer with the talented attacking midfielder.
Furthermore, Barcelona still has to pay RB Leipzig the transfer fee for Dani Olmo, which was closed at €55 million and apparently would not have the opportunity to amortize over the next six years. In this fiscal year, instead of the nine million that should have been amortized, the remaining 46 million of the transfer fee will be charged to the losses section.
Additionally, the loss of a player whose current market value is around €60 million also negatively impacts Barcelona, which could have achieved a considerable profit in case of a transfer, which is now not possible as Dani Olmo leaves for free. A catastrophic scenario from every angle for the Catalan entity.
