Sergio 'Kun' Agüero would be in a position to claim three million euros that FC Barcelona owes him. What is the origin of this debt? We detail it for you in FCBN
The adventure of Sergio 'Kun' Agüero at FC Barcelona was as exciting as it was short-lived. The Argentine forward, who had made history as '9' at Manchester City, arrived at the Catalan club in the 2021/22 season as a free agent, with the mission of providing goals to a forward line in urgent need.
However, shortly after starting his journey as a Culé, unfortunately, it was abruptly and unexpectedly interrupted. The reason? Ventricular arrhythmia that led to the retirement of the forward at the early age of 33, thus thwarting his aspirations to make history with Barcelona. During his brief time at the Catalan club, Agüero only managed to score once in five matches and missed the chance to share the field with his old friend Leo Messi, who joined Paris Saint-Germain in that same season just before his arrival at the Barcelona club.
Now, three years after the surprising retirement of 'Kun' Agüero, his name is once again associated with FC Barcelona. For sporting reasons? No. This time, the connection between both parties is limited to a presumed legal action taken by the Argentine forward against the Blaugrana entity.
Why would 'Kun' Agüero take legal action against FC Barcelona?
As reported by 'Mundo Deportivo', in their annual financial report (2023-24), FC Barcelona allegedly received a conciliation notification from 'Kun' Agüero, who claims that three million euros are owed to him corresponding to the termination of his contract with the club. It is worth noting that the contract of the former Manchester City player with the Barcelona team was for two seasons, until the 2022/23 season.
Although the 'Kun' waived receiving the payments for his second season as a Culé, he did expect to receive payment for the first, in which he had already played some matches. This payment, apparently, the Barcelona team was in a position to make, a compensation accepted by the then sports director, Mateu Alemany, and supposedly to be covered through the players' insurance.
This is where the controversy arises, as the insurance company reportedly refused to pay the requested amount arguing that 'Kun' Agüero's arrhythmia preexisted his association with FC Barcelona. This claim was strongly rebutted by the player's circle, who asserted that this time the arrhythmia manifested itself in a completely different location in the heart compared to previous episodes.
Due to Barcelona opting to follow the insurance's recommendation and withhold payment to 'Kun', the former Atletico Madrid player decided to take legal action to compel the Culé team to fulfill the agreed-upon payment, a payment that, it is worth noting, Agüero would be willing to settle extrajudicially, according to close sources. Apparently, the idol of the 'Citizens' is open to accepting a payment plan that could extend up to five years, all in order to maintain a cordial relationship with the Blaugrana entity, with whom he bid farewell amicably and hopes to continue that same line of relationship.
