Toni Fernández made history at Barça by becoming the second youngest player to debut for the first team, surpassed only by Lamine Yamal
On the night of Saturday, January 4, it was a night of debuts at FC Barcelona. Wojciech Szczesny debuted under the posts of the blue and garnet goal after arriving in the Catalan city last October following the injury of Ter Stegen, while Ronald Araujo donned the kit for the first time this season after being sidelined for over 5 months due to a serious muscle injury.
However, Toni Fernández stole the spotlight in the match against Barbastro. At 16 years and 173 days, the La Masia youth player became the second youngest player to officially debut for the first team. The first, of course, is Lamine Yamal, who did so at 15 years and 291 days.
Toni aims for the Supercopa de España
The player from Rubí entered the field in the 81st minute, replacing Pablo Torre, and showcased flashes of his quality and personality. The forward had already been part of the squads for matches against Villarreal, Getafe, and Osasuna in La Liga, as well as Monaco and Young Boys in the Champions League, although it was in the Copa del Rey match where Hansi Flick decided to give him his first opportunity in the 'big leagues'.
Now, having been tested by the Barça coach alongside his teammates, Fernández is set to travel with the first team to Saudi Arabia to compete in the Supercopa de España since Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor are still not registered, making this an ideal scenario to establish himself in the first team.
