Barça has set its stance regarding the future of Frenkie de Jong. If the Dutchman decides not to renew, the Catalans would leave him on the bench for the rest of the season and look for a way out for him in the summer
The saga of Frenkie de Jong and FC Barcelona is far from over. The lack of prominence for the Dutchman under Hansi Flick has condemned him, and now it is the Catalans who hold the cards, so, in light of the lack of movement regarding his renewal, the Catalans are willing to put him on the market next summer at a bargain price.
Indeed, the Blaugrana entity has been trying to advance negotiations to extend the Dutchman's commitment, whose contract expires in 2026, for several months, but the player has been dragging his feet, considering that he would have the final say on his future and that time was on his side. Now, the tables have turned.
Frenkie's ankle problems have prevented him from regaining his best form, and players like Marc Casadó and Gavi have surpassed him in the midfield rotation. For this reason, within Can Barça, there are already voices that consider selling the player during the next summer window to be the best solution to rid themselves of his high salary.
Barça Makes a Drastic Decision with Frenkie
Given the circumstances, the newspaper 'SPORT' claims that the Blaugrana entity is no longer in a hurry to advance in the renewal of a player who is unclear about his stay at the club and, unless there is a radical turn of events, the sports management intends to inform him before the end of the season that he is not part of the team's plans for the 2025/26 season.
At Barça, it is clear that it is not an option for De Jong to start the final year of his contract without having agreed to its extension, and if this scenario ends up occurring, they have made the decision to leave him on the bench for the entire season, as the idea is to prevent Frenkie from playing this last year hoping to leave for free in 2026.
Similarly, if the Dutchman agrees to negotiate his renewal, his salary would be reduced. Under this premise, Barça will work, and if they finally manage to close the deal, it would be finalized during the next summer. However, the Catalans already fear losing the player, even if they have to transfer him for a low fee. The drama continues.
