Jonathan David admitted to being in negotiations to renew his contract with Lille. However, the player did not rule out leaving the club as a free agent
The saga of Jonathan David seems far from finding a solution. The Canadian's contract ends at the end of the season, and several clubs across the continent are fighting for his signing at no cost. FC Barcelona is closely monitoring his situation as they consider him a market opportunity and starting January 1, they can begin negotiations to sign him next summer.
In the meantime, the scorer granted an interview to 'La Voix du Nord' in which, in addition to reflecting on his standout 2024 (he scored 33 goals in 50 matches), he spoke about his future and surprised everyone by leaving the door open to his continuation at Lille by admitting that he is in negotiations with the club to renew his link.
David does not rule out any option
"As the president has said on numerous occasions, there are negotiations. We are talking, but no decision has been made. We continue to talk and the door is never closed. It’s 50-50", confessed David, who seemed determined to leave Ligue 1 until a couple of weeks ago.
For now, the race for the North American continues, with Tottenham being the most interested in acquiring his services. Bayern Munich is also reportedly pushing for his signing, and Barça remains on standby for developments. However, Lille does not lose hope of continuing to count on their star player beyond 2025, so the drama will continue in the coming months.
