A footballer from the generation of 2008
Who is Guille Fernández and why does he train with the first team?
The presence of the young player from the youth team since the preseason is more than understandable considering the level of play he performs with the reserve team and the sporting and physical characteristics he has.
The last FC Barcelona squad, against Celta, included a name that, for many, is still practically unknown. It is Guillermo Fernández. He has already been called up to the first team for 7 official matches, but he has not yet made his debut. He has done so in the preseason, where he played against Olot (46'), Manchester City (16'), Real Madrid (26') and AC Milan (12'). In these friendlies he has been giving clues as to what kind of player he is, but he has immense potential.
Born on June 18, 2008 in Rubí, he is one of the youth team players that Flick had already noted when he arrived at FC Barcelona. Without hesitation, he called him up to train with the first team, as well as his cousin, Toni. He is 16 years old, but age is no longer an anecdote at this Barça. After being called up against Celta, Guille, as he is known, continues training with the first team and is likely to be called up for the match against Brest.
A complete midfielder
At his young age, Fernández has already made history with FC Barcelona. More specifically, at Barça Atlètic. He is the second youngest goalscorer in the history of the Barça reserve team, behind his cousin Toni, who is 29 days younger. Both arrived at La Masía at 10 years old, from RCD Espanyol, with the aim of one day playing in the first team. What neither of them could have imagined is having the prominence that they are beginning to have without even being of age.
Guillermo is a complete midfielder. He is 1.81 metres tall and has a very athletic physique. He is a very technical player, with great vision of the game and very good ball handling. He also performs splendidly in both areas, both when defending and attacking. He is still very young, so he can be moulded to explode in a specific area.
Positionally, Albert Sánchez usually includes him in the reserve team's starting eleven as an inside midfielder. He helps in defence and in bringing the ball out, but he also enters the rival area, which shows the long journey he has. Regarding Flick, in addition to trying him in the same position he plays in Barça Atlètic, he has made him play in the double pivot and even as an attacking midfielder.
He is a footballer who, in his minutes with the first team, has left details, but it is nothing compared to what he shows with the reserve team. However, his constant presence with the senior squad shows that the coach knows that he is a special player. He is one of those kids destined to play with the older team.
