FC Barcelona can see its victory in the 2025 Spanish Super Cup in a hopeful way, since it is usually an omen of a season with more than one title. At least that's what the statistics support.
Overwhelming, epic, and indisputable are just a few terms to describe the Barcelona FC's overwhelming victory. With goals from Raphinha (39' and 48'), Lamine Yamal (22'), Robert Lewandowski (36'), and Alejandro Balde (45+10'), the Culé team crushed a Real Madrid that showed a fairly poor level of play.
Despite the goals from Kylian Mbappé (5') and Rodrygo (60'), they were insufficient to stop the Blaugrana. In response, Hansi Flick's team secured the first title of the 2024-25 season at the King Abdullah Sports City, thus securing their fifteenth Supercopa de España in their rich history.
For FC Barcelona, adding this Supercopa de España to their trophy case is no small detail. Why? Based on statistics, in most cases where the Culé team is crowned Spanish Super Champion, this achievement usually comes with another title in the same season. Recent precedents support this.
Recent precedents supporting this notion
For example, in the year 2023, FC Barcelona was crowned champion of the Supercopa de España for the 2022-23 season. In that tournament, the Catalan team prevailed 1-3 with goals from Gavi, Robert Lewandowski, and Pedri González, thus securing their fourteenth Supercopa. Additionally, in that same season, Barça became champions of LaLiga Santander, adding their 27th title in the club's history.
In the 2018 Supercopa de España, FC Barcelona won their thirteenth Supercopa by defeating Sevilla 2-1 in the final with goals from Gerard Piqué and Ousmane Dembélé. In that same 2018-19 season, the team from Barcelona was crowned champions of LaLiga Santander.
In the 2016 Supercopa de España, where FC Barcelona won their twelfth Supercopa, the team prevailed in both matches. In the first leg, they won 0-2 against Sevilla at the Sánchez Pizjuán with goals from Luis Suárez and Munir El Haddadi, and in the second leg at the Camp Nou, they won 3-0 with a brace from Arda Turan and a goal from Leo Messi. Subsequently, Barça won the Copa del Rey 2016-17, their twenty-ninth title in this competition.
Barcelona is well on track to uphold this precedent once again
These are just a few examples that support the idea that winning the Supercopa de España often foreshadows future success for FC Barcelona. While there have been exceptions, they have been rare, setting a spectacular precedent for a Catalan team that, so far, maintains strong prospects in all competitions they are engaged in.
Currently, the Culé team is in third place in LaLiga EA Sports with 38 points, six points behind Atlético de Madrid. Additionally, they hold the second position in the UEFA Champions League with 15 points, three points behind Liverpool, and have already qualified for the Copa del Rey round of 16, where they will face Real Betis for a place in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
