Wojciech Szczesny has become a serious threat to Iñaki Peña. The Pole kept his goal clean for the second consecutive match and is aiming for the final.
A four-minute delay could have been the turning point of the season for Iñaki Peña and, above all, Wojciech Szczesny. The Alicante native was Hansi Flick's choice to start against Athletic Club, but a scheduling confusion caused him to arrive late to the pre-match activation session, and the German, inflexible on punctuality, relegated him to the bench and gave the starting position to the Pole.
'Tek', in this way, would protect the Blaugrana goal for the second consecutive match, and although he had little work against Barbastro, the story was different against the Bilbao team. Gradually, the team led by Ernesto Valverde approached the area of the Warsaw native, but showcasing his experience and authority, the goalkeeper solved each occasion practically without breaking a sweat.
Szczesny aims to be the starter in the final
Szczesny prevented the equalizer in the last action of the first half with a brutal save from a close-range shot by Iñaki Williams from the heart of the area, and in the second half, he made three commendable saves against shots from outside the area by Jauregizar, Vesga, and Nico Williams. The Athletic team, completely frustrated, could barely trouble the Pole, who has put Flick in a 'tight spot'.
And in his first 180 minutes as a Blaugrana, the goalkeeper has yet to see his net breached. Ahead of the Supercup final, the German coach will have to make a key decision, which involves either returning the position to Iñaki Peña or continuing to bet on a 'Tek' who, despite starting at a disadvantage in the race, is beginning to match the pace with his outstanding performances.
