The president of the UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin, has commented that the format of eliminatory to only one match has produced a more thrilling football in this final phase of the Champions League
In an interview conceded to 'Reuters', Aleksander Ceferin has spoken expressed his good feelings on the new format of the final phase of the Champions League that has carried out this season 2019-20 in Lisbon, happy by the result and surprised in addition to the good received that have had all the eliminatory, that to only party and in neutral field have been more thrilling.
This course changed the format to allow so the competition completed in a lapse of time shorter, after the pandemia of COVID-19 detained the football during several months in Europe from the month of March. Eight clubs headed to Lisbon and, in two weeks, have played all the corresponding parties with several days of rest so that the teams recover as it is had to.
"A format with a party and a system like the one of now would be much more thrilling that the format of before"
"We saw us forced to do it, but at the end see that we discover something new. So we will think it in the future with security", has signalled Ceferin in the interview in question, leaving like this the open door to that this new format of Champions League -and also of UEFA Europe League- can employ also in next campaigns.
The president of the UEFA sustains that, without a party of turn in which support, the teams classified for these last rounds have seen forced to go to by the goals from the beginning, without half inks. "There has been less tactical. If it is to a party, if a team marks, the another has to mark the before possible. If it treats of a system of two turns, the teams see with time to win the next".
Change the format and leave it like this, with fewer parties, would not like at all to the televisions and to the sponsors. Ceferin Is conscious of this. "Of course also we have to think in the fact that have fewer parties and the means can say 'hear, there are not so many parties as before, this changes', so we will have to argue it when all this situation finish", does upsetting the leader of the UEFA.
Until the year 2025 keeps the current format
For now the current format is blocked contractualmente until the season 2024-25, but the discussions on how face the competition in the coming years will have to begin to finals of this year, especially if there is consensus in changing the structure of the tournament. "Fix you that it is a very interesting format. Now I doubt a lot with the current calendar that can do some eighth of final, because it would carry too time. But a format with a party and a system like the one of now would be much more thrilling that the format of before", insists Ceferin.
In the offices of the UEFA, in this sense, meditarán on the possible change of format with time and patience. "We have not argued it with anybody, is only an idea, but if we played with this system would play in a city. If you play in a city, can have a week of football or something like this. But it is too prompt to think in this". Time to the time.
