LIST OF 100 BEST PLAYERS
Aitana Bonmatí leads the world ranking once again, and Spain remains at the top
The Barça player and two-time Ballon d'Or winner repeats as the best in the world in a refreshed list from the British newspaper The Guardian
Aitana Bonmatí continues to make history. The FC Barcelona midfielder has been recognized once again as the best footballer in the world in the list of the 100 best players from The Guardian, achieving what only her teammate Alexia Putellas had accomplished before: leading this ranking in consecutive years.
Bonmatí, who has won the Ballon d'Or twice in a row, received votes from the 99 judges, leading by 667 points over her teammate Caroline Graham Hansen, who reached her best position after a standout year both at the club and with the Norwegian national team.
A Year of Changes
The 2024 edition reflects significant shifts in women's football, with 15 new players on the list. New names include Momoko Tanikawa and Lizbeth Ovalle, as well as Colombian Mayra Ramírez, who climbed 83 positions to rank among the top 20 after excelling at Chelsea and the Olympic Games.
The ranking also highlights players who solidify their status, such as Lucy Bronze and Wendie Renard, who have appeared in every edition, and marks the return of legendary Marta, who at 38 years old continues to shine after winning the NWSL title and an Olympic silver medal with Brazil.
Spanish Dominance
Spain maintains its position as the nation with the most representatives on the ranking, closely followed by England and the United States. However, in the leagues, the English Women's Super League leads with 27 players, pushing Spain's Liga F into third place.
The dominance of FC Barcelona is also evident, with 14 players on the list, reaffirming its position as one of the best teams in the world. Real Madrid, with Linda Caicedo as one of the youngest players on the list, also contributes to the success of Spanish football.
