FIFA confirmed the holding of the The Best 2024 awards gala on Tuesday, December 17. Due to the tight international calendar, the event will be held virtually
FIFA surprised the football world with the confirmation of the date and format of the The Best 2024 awards gala, which in its previous edition was held in the city of London. Given the tight international calendar in the early months of 2025 (the previous gala took place on January 15), the highest governing body of world football decided to organize the event virtually.
In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the gala also featured the participation of many of its nominees through this means, although there was a formal gala at FIFA's headquarters in Zurich. This year, however, all awards will be presented virtually. In the previous edition, in fact, none of the three finalists for the best player award (Leo Messi, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappé) were present at the gala due to commitments with their clubs.
The award ultimately went back to La Pulga for the second consecutive year, while Aitana Bonmatí succeeded Alexia Putellas as the best player. Voting for all categories was open from November 28 to December 10. In total, there are 12 awards presented at the gala, including the Fair Play award and the Best Fan award.
