As the 2024-2025 season gets underway in all leagues around the world, the race for the Golden Boot is beginning to take shape. The great football strikers are competing head to head for the award that recognises the top scorer of the season and which currently belongs to Harry Kane, who last season took home the prize after scoring 36 goals, and therefore 72 points, in his first year at Bayern Munich.

So far this season, the English striker has not managed to sneak into the ranking of the top 10 scorers of 24/25, a list that is full of several new names. At FCBN we show it to you:

How does the Golden Boot scoring system work?

The reason behind so many 'unknown' scorers for many is that, in addition to goals, the ESM (European Sports Media) uses a points system to calculate the qualifying ratio according to guidelines that depend, above all, on quantifying the value of goals through the complexity of the competition. That is, the value of goals would be distributed in the following way according to the country where it is played.

In this sense, in the Premier League, LaLiga EASports, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 goals are quantified with two points, while in the Austrian, Belgian, Bulgarian, Czech, Portuguese, Croatian, Scottish, Greek, Dutch, Israeli, Polish, Serbian, Russian, Norwegian, Turkish, Ukrainian, Belarusian and Swiss leagues goals are valued with 1.5 points.

Finally, in the rest of European football competitions (Denmark, Slovakia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Estonia, Latvia, etc.), goals are scored at one per goal.

The big absences from the current classification

Due to this scoring system, big names have not yet managed to break into the top 10 of top scorers. Robert Lewandowski, FC Barcelona's top scorer, has scored 6 goals in 502 minutes for a total of 12 points. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé, Real Madrid's offensive reference, has scored 4 goals in 530 minutes so far this season, with a total of 8 points.

Meanwhile, Harry Kane, current winner of the award, has 10 points for having celebrated 5 goals in 346 minutes with Bayern Munich. Finally, Marcus Thuram, Inter Milan's top scorer, has scored 4 goals in 409 minutes in Serie A, recording 8 points in the standings.
