Leo Messi was the only absentee at the presentation of the highest civilian honor in the United States, the Medal of Freedom, awarded by the president of the country to various personalities for their outstanding work in different fields. The Inter Miami player was awarded for being the most decorated footballer in history, for his work in programs that promote well-being and education for children around the world, as well as being a goodwill ambassador for Unicef. And undoubtedly, a significant reason was the arrival of Leo Messi to MLS, the football league of the United States in 2023.
A Historic and Very Controversial No-Show
The ceremony for the Medal of Freedom is a moment of utmost solemnity. Many Americans wait years to be chosen; however, this was not the case for Leo Messi, who was the only one of the eighteen honorees who did not attend the White House and did not send any representative. Furthermore, Leo was the first footballer to receive this distinction, and his unjustified absence has sparked much controversy.
In addition to Leo Messi, other personalities such as former basketball player Magic Johnson, chef José Andrés, singer Bono, designer Ralph Lauren, and actor Michael J. Fox were also honored.
