For the sixth consecutive season, the Supercopa de España will be held in January with a 'final four' format. The RFEF distributes around 20 million euros in prizes, most of which are earned by FC Barcelona and Real Madrid
FC Barcelona will once again compete in the Supercopa de España starting this Wednesday, January 8. According to the contract signed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) with the Saudi government, the Spanish entity earns 40 million euros net for bringing the tournament to Arab soil. About 50% of that money goes to the coffers of the participating clubs, with Barça and Real Madrid receiving the largest share.
Initially, both 'culés' and 'merengues' are guaranteed a total of 6 'kilos' each for participating in the tournament. Additionally, the winner takes home a couple of million more, while the runner-up receives €1M for reaching the final. Thus, Barça can earn up to 8 million euros for lifting a trophy they have won 14 times, the last time being in the 2022 edition (victory 1-3 against Real Madrid).
On their part, Athletic is guaranteed around 2 'kilos' for traveling to Arabia, and Mallorca will earn another 850,000 euros. Both the Basques and the Balearics have expressed their dissatisfaction with the huge inequality in the distribution of earnings, something that has also occurred with the other participating clubs in previous editions. The Supercopa will continue to be held in its current format and in Saudi Arabia, at least until 2029.
Barça will seek to maintain its dominance in the Supercopa de España
The culés lead the Supercopa's record with one more title than Real Madrid (13). In third place, far behind the azulgranas and blancos, is Athletic Club, with 3 titles. Mallorca, on the other hand, has only been able to lift this trophy in 1998. Barça is also the club with the most finals played (26), with seven more than Madrid (19). The 'Casa Blanca' will defend the title obtained last year, precisely against the culés (4-1).
The Clásico, in fact, has featured in the last three editions of the tournament. In 2022, Madrid defeated Barça in the semifinals (2-3), while in 2023 the victory was for the azulgrana team. The last two encounters have been in the final, and since the tournament has been held in the 'final four' format, Barcelona has one title and two runner-up finishes. The 'merengues', for their part, have won the trophy three times, with only one final lost.
