Fermín López had his best match with the FC Barcelona first team on Sunday against Valencia (7-1). The midfielder led the Blaugrana's rout with a couple of goals and assists.
FC Barcelona crushed Valencia in another display of the devastating offensive power of Hansi Flick's team (7-1). The coach took the opportunity to refresh his lineup with four changes from the last two matches, against Getafe and Benfica. Fermín López replaced Gavi in the Blaugrana attack and the '16' shone with what was undoubtedly his best match since his debut with the first team in August 2023.
The '16' led the Blaugrana midfield, showing great intensity to help in recovery and always alert to exploit the spaces offered by the 'che' defense. In the 14th minute, he provided the third Blaugrana goal with a pass into space to Raphinha, who finished comfortably after leaving Mamardashvili behind. Ten minutes later, Barça repeated the formula, this time with Pau Cubarsí as the assistant with one of his always lethal long passes that López finished by delicately chipping the ball to leave the opposing goalkeeper static.
Barça sealed the 'five' before halftime with Fermín's second goal, in the 45+9'. The midfielder pounced on a rebound off the crossbar after a shot from Raphinha to finish into an empty net. Valencia managed to pull one back in the 59th minute with a goal from Hugo Duro, but Robert Lewandowski, who had come on six minutes earlier, restored the five-goal advantage for the Catalans with a lethal cross shot, following a perfect through ball from the player from Huelva.
All of Fermín López's records against Valencia
For Fermín, the match was historic twice against Valencia. Since his debut with Barça in 2023-24, it is the first time that the midfielder has scored and assisted in the same game with the Barça first team (63 appearances). With his double on Sunday, the '16' has broken a long scoring drought, as he had not scored since November 6 in the Champions League match against Estrella Roja (2-5).
Also, at 21 years and 260 days, López became the youngest Barça player to be involved in four goals in a single LaLiga match since Bojan Krkic did so against Real Valladolid on March 23, 2008 (17 years and 208 days in the 4-1 win, with two goals and assists from the man from Linyola). And, after 14 goals and 5 assists in 67 games, the youth player managed to score and assist for the first time in the same match with Barcelona in all competitions.
Not in vain, he is the second player of the Blaugrana team to be involved in three goals before half-time (2W + 1L) in a duel in the 24-25 after the 'hat-trick' that Robert Lewandowski scored in 32 minutes against Alavés at Mendizorroza, on October 6. Likewise, in the 2024-25, it is the first time that a player has scored and assisted twice in a LaLiga match. For Barça, the last to score and assist twice in a league match had been Leo Messi, on October 29, 2019 against Valladolid (5-1). That day, together with 'La Pulga', Clément Lenglet, Arturo Vidal and Luis Suárez scored at Camp Nou.
