This is the historical list of winners of the Ballon d'Or: list of winners of the award year by year and ranking of the players who have won it the most times

France Football has been awarding the Ballon d'Or since 1956 to the best footballer of the year, and since 2018 to the best female footballer. The 2024 edition was the 68th edition in men's football and the 6th edition in women's football.

Manchester City's Spanish player Rodrigo Hernández 'Rodri' has been awarded Best Player of the Year in the men's category and FC Barcelona's Spanish player Aitana Bonmatí, for the second consecutive year, in the women's category.

Leo Messi is the most decorated player in the history of the award, with 8 awards. Cristiano Ronaldo follows him with five trophies, his last being in 2017. Far from the two players with the most awards, there are three players who have managed to win the award on three occasions: Platini, Cruyff and Van Basten.

As for the Women's Ballon d'Or, it is worth highlighting FC Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas, who made history by being the first Spanish player to win one of the most coveted awards in the world of football. The following season she revalidated the award, being the first player to win the award twice in a row.

The following year, an injury kept Alexia off the pitch for much of the season, so she was not among the nominees. Finally, Aitana Bonmatí won the coveted trophy for the first time after winning absolutely everything on an individual and collective level. This year she has won the award again, equalling her teammate Alexia Putellas.
