CHANGES IN THE NATIONAL TEAM
The 2024 of the Spanish Women's National Team: A year of glory and challenges
With titles and setbacks, La Roja closes a 2024 full of ups and downs while setting its sights on winning Euro 2025
The Spanish women's national team closed 2024 as a year of emotions, marked by successes, Olympic disappointments and a generational change that generated controversy.
After the historic victory at the 2023 World Cup, La Roja started 2024 with strength. They won the first edition of the women's Nations League after defeating the Netherlands in the semi-finals and France in the final. This title consolidated their position among the best teams in the world, and gave them a ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
However, Olympic hopes quickly faded. Despite a promising start in the group stage, the team showed weaknesses in the final rounds. Elimination in the semi-finals against Brazil and defeat against Germany in the bronze match left Spain with an Olympic diploma but no medals.
The end of the year was marked by controversial decisions. The exclusion of Jenni Hermoso and Irene Paredes from the last call-up of Montse Tomé; signaled the start of a generational change that aims to renew the squad for the upcoming challenges.
The big goal for 2025 will be the Euro Cup in Switzerland, where Spain will seek to add to its trophy cabinet the only major title it still lacks. With rivals such as Italy, Belgium and Portugal in the group stage, the team will face a difficult path, but one full of possibilities.
