Until now, it is unknown if Jonathan David continues to be a viable option to sign for FC Barcelona. However, this possibility seems to be getting further and further away from becoming reality
FC Barcelona is looking to find a reliable successor for Robert Lewandowski, the main attacking reference of the azulgrana team at present, with his 23 goals so far in the 2024-25 season. However, the Warsaw native seems to be approaching the twilight of his career as a Barça player, as his contract expires on June 30, 2026, when 'Lewy', who would then be 37 years old, appears unlikely to be renewed by Barça.
With this in mind, it's not surprising that Barcelona is seeking a top striker to facilitate this transition smoothly. Although names like Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting Club Portugal and Erling Haaland from Manchester City are favorites, these options are economically challenging to assume at the moment. Therefore, more affordable alternatives that can fit into the culé sports project are being evaluated.
One of the names that has emerged on Barcelona's agenda is Jonathan David, a striker whose contract with LOSC Lille ends on June 30, 2025, and if not renewed, could join Barcelona as a free agent. With a track record supporting his potential as a goal-scoring 'killer' (17 goals and five assists in 26 matches in this 2024-25 season), the Canadian presents himself as an attractive asset for the club.
However, apparently, Jonathan David's candidacy has lost strength in recent days, and appears to be in jeopardy. Why? Because January (winter transfer market) is approaching, when the Brooklyn native will be able to negotiate with other teams as a free agent, and several important teams like Juventus, AC Milan, Napoli, Aston Villa, Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham, West Ham, Newcastle United, and Paris Saint-Germain have shown interest in him.
Jonathan David reportedly tempted by Al-Nassr
Not only that, apparently a team from Saudi Arabia has joined the fight for the striker. According to the transfer specialist journalist Ekrem Konur, Al Nassr, the team of Cristiano Ronaldo and company, wants to sign Jonathan David and is prepared to offer between 10 and 15 million euros in January to LOSC Lille to avoid an auction in the next summer market.
It is suggested that Al-Nassr will try to convince the player by exceeding his salary demands, which are around 6 million euros, an amount that the Arab team is willing to surpass to leave Barcelona and other European clubs without the option to sign Jonathan David. Will they succeed?
