Barça is working to finalize the extensions of several key players whose contracts expire in 1 or 2 years before risking losing them as free agents
The FC Barcelona has moved away from making any signings during the winter market as there are other priorities that require their efforts. The Blaugrana entity aims to resolve the pending renewal files as soon as possible, and the sports management, led by Deco, has focused all its attention on solving these cases before negotiations become 'stagnant'.
While there are some agreements in principle, such as those of Gavi and Pedri, there are other 'soap operas' that remain unresolved, such as those of Frenkie de Jong and Ronald Araújo. Additionally, the contracts of important players like Robert Lewandowski and Iñigo Martínez are set to expire soon, prompting the culés to accelerate efforts to bring these operations to a successful conclusion.
Iñigo Martínez and Gerard Martín
The two immediate files. Both defenders have earned a place in Hansi Flick's rotation, but their contracts end at the end of the season. The Basque player has established himself as one of the pillars of the new German project and is the player with the most minutes accumulated so far this season, so even though he has not yet signed his new commitment, the Catalans are confident in his renewal.
Like the center-back, the Blaugrana academy player has also been one of the surprises of this campaign, and the German coach has shown his trust in his performances. For this reason, Barça decided to extend his contract with the club until 2028 with a release clause of 100 million euros. The agreement is already closed, and only the signature and official announcement are pending, which could arrive soon.
Gavi and Pedri
The Barça has more than just the renewal of two of its great 'jewels' underway. The Canary player has put his physical problems behind him and is becoming one of the team's standout figures this season. His contract expires in 2026, but the Blaugrana have already contacted his agents and the feelings are excellent.
On the other hand, once he recovered from the serious knee injury that kept him off the pitch for a year, Gavi and his representative, Iván de la Peña, will be ready to negotiate the extension of the Andalusian's contract, which expires in July 2026. Like Pedri, both parties are expected to reach an agreement without issues.
Ronald Araújo and Frenkie de Jong
The two most complicated cases for Barça. The situation of De Jong is very delicate, as his contract ends in 2026 and, as of today, discussions for his renewal are completely stalled. The club insists on him forgiving part of his salary, but the Dutchman is not yielding and the positions are far apart, which is why the culés do not rule out putting him on the market next summer if no progress is made in a possible agreement in the coming weeks.
This is in contrast to Ronald Araújo, whose future in the Catalan city seemed distant several months ago but now appears to be practically secured. The Uruguayan wants to continue wearing the Blaugrana jersey, and both Flick and the club are excited about the return of the team's second captain, so everything points to the fact that, despite certain economic differences, the 'soap opera' of the center-back will be resolved in the coming months.
Robert Lewandowski
The Polish player has experienced a sporting renaissance under Hansi Flick. At 36 years old, the striker has been one of the most decisive players in the first half of the season, and the expectation is that in February he will meet 60% of the matches he needs to play for his contract, which expires at the end of the season, to be extended for another year. The Barça has full confidence in the '9' and everything indicates that he will continue to be the starting center forward, at least until 2026.
Iñaki Peña and Andreas Christensen
The cases of the goalkeeper and the Dane are two complex files for Barça. Both players' contracts end in 2026, but the reality is that, with the entire squad healthy, neither has a guaranteed place in the starting eleven.
Despite their good performances, the Alicante native is clearly behind Marc-André Ter Stegen in the rotation, while the 'overbooking' of center-backs, which could include a Jonathan Tah who is within reach, would leave the defender without a spot on the team. For this reason, the Catalans have not yet made them a renewal offer, and their futures in the Catalan city are not secured, as the possibility of a potential transfer remains latent.
Eric García and Pablo Torre
Both players' contracts end in 2026, but their roles in Hansi Flick's scheme place them as two of the major discards of the Blaugrana institution. Although the coach has shown confidence in them during certain stretches of the season, neither seems to be a regular in the German's rotation and could seek minutes and regularity in a new horizon next summer. For now, there are no movements regarding the extension of their contracts.
Lamine Yamal
The 'crown jewel'. The continuity of the Mataró star at the club is neither doubted nor discussed. The future sports project will be built around his figure, and although his current contract with the Catalan team ends in 2026 because it is the maximum allowed for a minor, a contract extension (with superstar economic conditions) until 2030 is expected once he reaches adulthood.
