Has FC Barcelona already set aside the signing of Joshua Kimmich? At first glance, it seems so, as the Blaugrana team, after not adding any names in the summer transfer market, managed to find internal solutions to strengthen their midfield, boosting players like Marc Casadó, who has emerged as a stellar pivot, alongside Pedri González, another player who has found stepping back as a central midfielder a real opportunity to step up in his career.
Not only that, the Catalan team has other midfielders who can reinforce that area, such as the much-debated Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, and Andreas Christensen, who can adapt to that role, awaiting the recovery of Marc Bernal from his injury.
In light of this, interest in Kimmich seems to have taken a back seat, although it has not been forgotten, especially if the right conditions arise for the Rottweil native, who is favored by Hansi Flick, to don the Blaugrana jersey.
Uncertainty still reigns regarding Kimmich's renewal with Bayern Munich
In this regard, interest in Kimmich has not entirely disappeared for a specific reason: the uncertainty surrounding the renewal of the German international with Bayern Munich, as his contract expires on June 30, 2025. It should be noted that the contract extension of the Stuttgart youth product has been an emotional rollercoaster, with changes in stance on more than one occasion.
Although Kimmich's renewal seemed to be on track, given that the player once again became pivotal at Bayern Munich under Vincent Kompany's guidance and relations returned to an amicable tone, with the midfielder expressing his apparent desire to renew, the Munich-based team seems eager to finalize his contract extension.
The ultimatum from Bayern to their talented midfielder
At this point, as reported by 'Sky Sports Germany' journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich has allegedly requested Kimmich to clarify his renewal situation soon, preferably before the end of 2024 or at the start of January, urging the German midfielder, who appears indecisive, to decide whether he wants to stay in the Bavarian club's sporting project or not.
It will now be interesting to see if Joshua ultimately does not renew and if Barcelona could try to make a move for him. Kimmich, a top-level player who can play as a central midfielder or right-back, might prove difficult to acquire for the Catalan side, given his transfer value and wages. Concurrently, the Barcelona team currently seems interested in reinforcing other positions like winger or left-back.
