Winter transfer market
The January transfer market is approaching. Which players could leave Barça?
Barça's squad has players who are barely playing and who are very interesting for other teams, so the first month of 2025 could mean departures
2024 is drawing to a close. With Christmas now behind us, there are only a few days left until New Year's Eve, which will be the farewell to the current year. 2025 will arrive with new goals but, above all, it will do so with the winter transfer market. This is a particular transfer period, in which not many or large operations usually occur. However, Joan Laporta's Board of Directors has given us a January full of excitement and expectations, like that of the 21/22 season, when Adama, Dani Alves, Ferran and Aubameyang arrived.
A priori, the latest information suggests that Barça will not make any signings in this market. All efforts will focus on the registration of those who arrived in the summer: Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor. The difficult economic situation forced them to be registered until the end of 2024, taking advantage of the salary of injured players. However, the priority is for them to be permanently registered in January. Something that could happen, and that would help a lot to complete this task, is that there are departures and there are several names whose situation suggests that they could change teams.
Eric García and Christensen, candidates in defence
The centre of the Blaugrana defence, with all the men on the payroll, is somewhat overpopulated. There are five players occupying 2 positions: Cubarsí and Iñigo, the starters until now, Araujo, Christensen and Eric García. Likewise, Sergi Domínguez, a youth player who has been in the first team dynamics all season, occupies that same position. There are a total of six players, so it is possible that there could be some departures.
Eric García and Andreas Christensen are two players with a lot of chances. The first one is not having much participation so far this season and, when he does, he is more of a midfielder than a defender. This context, and his near-exit in the summer to Girona, suggest that the Martorell native could leave the Catalans in January. Regarding the Dane, he only played 25 minutes in the first matchday of LaLiga, as an Achilles tendon injury has not allowed him to be available. Upon his return, he could opt to leave due to the competition in his position.
The logical thing is that, if one of these two leaves in the winter, only one of them will do so. It is important to remember that the squad cannot be left without top-level players. In addition, both players can play in the midfield, so, taking into account that Marc Casadó does not have a clear substitute, it does not seem like a good idea to get rid of players who can be placed there, unless a signing is made.
Pablo Torre and Ansu Fati live in difficult contexts
Despite the lack of players due to the short squad that Hansi Flick works with on a daily basis, there are players who clearly play few minutes. Ansu Fati and Pablo Torre are clear examples of this. The former is facing what could be his last chance at Barça, but injuries have not given him continuity. Also, the level offered in the time he has been on the pitch has not been anything to write home about. So, perhaps the January market could end with his departure, which would mean the release of a large salary for the club.
On the other hand, the Cantabrian midfielder has not played for 5 consecutive games and it is the second time that he has gone that many games without dressing up. In total, there are 16 games that he has completed on the bench. In fact, he has only participated in 9 matches this season. Despite the fact that he was very important in the preseason and his level on the pitch is good, it is clear that there is something wrong. Torre does not even enter into comeback contexts. This situation leads to the thought that he could leave Can Barça in January.
In addition to those mentioned, there are other players who have offers from other clubs and may consider them. This is the case of Pau Victor, Gerard Martin or Hector Fort, for example. All three have had and have Spanish teams following them and looking for their loans. The market lasts a month and many things can happen, we will have to wait to see how things unfold.
