The league phase of the UEFA Champions League concluded this Wednesday with a marathon of 18 simultaneous matches that brought significant changes to the standings

Calendar of FC Barcelona

The UEFA Champions League closed this Wednesday its league phase with a historic matchday in which 18 matches were played simultaneously. The final standings concluded with Liverpool, FC Barcelona, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Atlético Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, LOSC Lille, and Aston Villa as the top eight teams qualifying for the Round of 16. The Catalan team finished the first phase in second place with 19 points, thanks to their draw against Atalanta (2-1).

However, the culés did not take advantage of Liverpool's surprising defeat at PSV Eindhoven (3-2) to seize the lead. The 'reds' fielded a completely alternative team and allowed the Dutch side to secure their place in the TOP-24 as the fourteenth-placed team, with 14 points. Behind the Catalans and the English, Arsenal finished with 19 points as well. The 'gunners' struggled to defeat Girona in Montilivi (1-2) against a 'red and white' team that had already been eliminated a couple of matchdays ago.

Behind Arsenal finished Inter Milan, with the same number of points (19). The 'nerazzurris' did not falter at home against Monaco (3-0). Despite the heavy defeat, the French team will be in the playoff as the seventeenth-placed team. The other three clubs advancing directly to the Round of 16 are Atlético Madrid (18), Bayer Leverkusen (16), and Aston Villa (16), thanks to their victories against Salzburg (1-4), Sparta Prague (2-0), and Celtic (4-2), respectively.

Barça did their homework in Montjuïc and finished second

For Barça, the matchday was almost a formality, after having sealed their direct qualification to the Round of 16 against Benfica (4-5). Nevertheless, Hansi Flick fielded most of his starters, including the attacking trio made up of Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, and Robert Lewandowski. The player from Mataró opened the scoring in the 47th minute thanks to a great assist from Rafa, who also provided the second goal scored by Ronald Araujo with a header in the 72nd minute.

The culés were ahead twice, but Atalanta responded with a stunning goal from Éderson in the 67th minute and another from Mario Pasalic in the 79th minute. The draw left a bittersweet taste for both teams, especially for the Italians, as they will now have to face Bruges or Sporting CP in the playoff. Barça, on the other hand, could not catch up to Liverpool at the top and will now wait for Monaco, Brest, PSG, or Benfica, three of the four rivals they have already faced in the league phase, except for Paris.

Madrid fulfilled against Brest, but it wasn't enough to avoid the playoff

Real Madrid, for their part, thrashed Brest in France (0-3), but it wasn't enough to qualify within the TOP-8. The 'merengues' took the lead in the first half with a goal from Rodrygo Goes. In the second half, Jude Bellingham extended the visitors' lead, prior to a goal disallowed for Brest due to offside detected by VAR. Later, Rodrygo capped off the thrashing with his second goal of the night. In the end, Carlo Ancelotti's team will have to play in the playoff after finishing the league phase in 11th place, with 15 points and a goal difference of +8. Brest will also be in the playoff as the eighteenth-placed team.

Now, the whites await Celtic or Manchester City, who also secured their place in the playoff with a home victory against Bruges (3-1). The 'cityzens' had to come from behind against the Belgians with goals from Mateo Kovacic, Joel Ordóñez (own goal), and Savinho, and they could also face Bayern Munich, who had a much quieter night against the weak Slovan Bratislava (3-1). Despite the defeat, Bruges made it into the TOP-24 as the last-placed team, thanks to Stuttgart's loss against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Germans were thrashed at home by Luis Enrique's team (1-4), a result that allows the French to advance to the playoff in 15th place, just ahead of Benfica, who also won as visitors on Wednesday against Juventus (0-2). The 'Vecchia Signora' dropped to 20th place, but will also be in the playoff along with Celtic, who finished twenty-first despite being thrashed at Aston Villa (4-2).
