FC Barcelona shines with 7 players called up to the Spanish national team for the FIFA date

Calendar of FC Barcelona

The FC Barcelona, like in its great glorious times, has once again established itself as the main core of the Spanish national team. And how could it not be? For this FIFA date in March (from the 17th to the 25th), in which the 'Red' will face the Netherlands in a two-legged tie corresponding to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League, it has decided to call up a total of seven culés.

SPAIN'S MATCHES IN THE MARCH FIFA DATE (NATIONS LEAGUE 2025)
  • March 20 in Rotterdam 🇳🇱 (Feyenoord Stadium): 🇳🇱 Netherlands - Spain 🇪🇸 | ⌚ 20:45 h CET
  • March 23 in Valencia 🇪🇸 (Mestalla): 🇪🇸 Spain - Netherlands 🇳🇱 | ⌚ 20:45 h CET

In the list of 27 players called up by the national coach, Luis de la Fuente, are the familiar names of Lamine Yamal, Pedri González, Dani Olmo, and Ferran Torres, who have become the most recurrent azulgranas in the coach's call-ups. Given the excellent form they are experiencing with the FC Barcelona, their selection was practically a given.

Award for Iñigo Martínez

Finally, justice has been done for Iñigo Martínez. The Basque is one of the best left-backs currently, so the Riojan coach has decided, at the age of 33, to give him a new opportunity to wear the national team jersey, which he has not donned since November 2023.

At the same time, other less surprising call-ups include Pau Cubarsí and Marc Casadó, who, despite their youth, are beginning to stand out in the orbit of the 'Red'. Their performances with Barcelona have been stellar, with Cubarsí being an undisputed starter in defense and Casadó one of the best midfielders in the international sports scene, despite having slightly reduced his playing minutes. This makes their selection not a coincidence at all.

Alejandro Balde, a notable absence in Spain's call-up

On another note, among the absences related to FC Barcelona that can be observed in this list, the exclusion of Alejandro Balde stands out, who can currently be considered one of the best left-backs in the world, but De la Fuente has ultimately opted to continue trusting his two main left-backs, Alejandro Grimaldo and Marc Cucurella. So the Barcelonian will have to wait for a future call-up to represent the national team again, a situation he has not experienced since October 2023.

...And Gavi

On the other hand, the most nostalgic absence of all is reflected in the non-call-up of Pablo Gavi to the national team. The Andalusian, who used to be a pillar in the 'Red's' sports project, will have to keep working to regain his best level of play and be able to re-enter the orbit of players to be followed by Luis de la Fuente.

It is worth recalling that the azulgrana '6' has not been called up to the national team since November 2023. Specifically, when he suffered that unfortunate complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and an associated injury to the lateral meniscus, which kept him off the field for more than a year.

Pablo Torre, Fermín López, and Gerard Martín will join the U-21 team of Santi Denia

Lastly, but not least, it is important to highlight that other players from the first team of FC Barcelona were also called up by Spain, but in their lower categories. Fermín López, Pablo Torre, and Gerard Martín (who debuts), have been called up for the U-21 team of Santi Denia, which will play friendlies against the teams of the Czech Republic and Germany.
