Florian Wirtz raised all the alarms at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. The winger suffered a harsh tackle on his right foot that sent him to the hospital
Bayer Leverkusen completed a week to forget on Saturday. In addition to the defeats against Bayern Munich, in the first leg of the Champions round of 16 (3-0) and against Werder Bremen in the league (0-2), the team coached by Xabi Alonso lost its main figure, Florian Wirtz, likely for the rest of the season.
In the 14th minute of the match against Bremen, the 21-year-old winger suffered a brutal stamp on his right foot that forced him not only to leave the match but also to go straight to the hospital. “We expect the worst, and within that scenario, the best", commented the CEO of the Bayer team, Fernando Carro, referring to the status of the '10'.
Similarly, Alonso did not issue an encouraging prognosis about the 21-year-old forward. "I still can't say what it is. Now we have to wait hour by hour", assured the Spanish coach. So far in the 2024/25 season, Florian has scored 15 goals and provided 13 assists in 39 matches (2,917 minutes) with Leverkusen, being the most decisive player on the team.

For Bayer, the outlook cannot be more discouraging with their main star. Besides the impact of losing him for the final stretch of the season, the rumors about his possible departure do not cease. The player from Pulheim is the main target of Bayern Munich for the upcoming transfer market, but in the Premier League, there are also at least a couple of teams interested in him.
However, Leverkusen does not intend to make it easy for the '10' to leave. Recent rumors indicate a transfer for a minimum of 130 million euros, an amount practically impossible for the Bavarian team to cover. The German international is under contract until June 2027, and his market value has already reached 140 million. A long-term injury will undoubtedly negatively impact the forward's market plans.
